HBO Sports unleashes an explosive middleweight twin bill when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: SERGIO MARTINEZ VS. SERGIY DZINZIRUK AND ANDY LEE VS. CRAIG MCEWAN is seen live SATURDAY, MARCH 12 (10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT) from the MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Conn., exclusively on HBO. The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING team of Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for all the action, presented in HDTV and in Spanish on HBO Latino.
Other HBO playdates: March 13 (10:30 a.m.) and 14 (11:30 p.m.)
HBO2 playdates: March 13 (4:45 p.m.) and 15 (11:00 p.m.)
In the main event, consensus 2010 Fighter of the Year Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs), originally from Buenos Aires and now living in Oxnard, Cal., takes on undefeated Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 34 KOs) from Ukraine, now fighting out of Hamburg, Germany, in a scheduled 12-round matchup.
Having fought a majority of his fights overseas, Martinez first caught the attention of American boxing fans when he methodically dismantled Kelly Pavlik to become middleweight champion last April. His first title defense was a rematch with the accomplished Paul Williams, one of the most avoided fighters around, in which he avenged a disputed loss with a devastating second-round knockout victory.
Dzinziruk, who has successfully defended his junior middleweight title six times while fighting almost exclusively in Europe, moves up in weight to take on Martinez for his second American appearance. Like Martinez before him, he hopes to make his mark in the U.S. by conquering a tough foe.
In the opening bout, rising middleweights Andy Lee (24-1, 18 KOs), originally from Ireland and now living in Detroit, and undefeated Craig McEwan (19-0, 10 KOs), from Edinburgh, Scotland and now fighting out of Hollywood, Cal., meet in a scheduled ten-round contest.
All HBO boxing events are presented in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.
The evening of exclusive sports programming on HBO includes the premiere of the HBO Sports documentary film “Runnin' Rebels of UNLV,” (9:30 p.m. ET/PT) which traces the history of Jerry Tarkanian's college basketball dynasty in Las Vegas.
The executive producer of WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is Rick Bernstein; producer, Dave Harmon; director, Marc Payton.
