AVILA'S BOXING CHATTER Mia St. John, and More

For more than a decade the face of Mia St. John has adorned magazines, posters and television screens as she blazed a trail in the female boxing world.

Not many people know that St. John has worked on various charitable organizations, including one that she established several years ago.

The Mia St. John Foundation is sponsoring a fundraising event called “El Saber es Poder/Knowledge is Power” on Friday May 20, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Watermarke Tower located at 705 W. Ninth Street in downtown L.A.

St. John has been active in other work and will share Friday’s non-profit event with a large number of other luminaries including models Leila Shennib, Daphnee Duplaix, musicians Jude, Daisy Gomez, and DJ Severe, plus television star Lou Pizzaro of Operation Repo to name a few. A number of professional athletes and media personalities including promoter Claudia Ollis of Bad Chicks will also attend the affair.

All proceeds go toward inner city youth programs.

Two undefeated junior welterweight prospects, Oscar Andrade (5-0, 2 KOs) and Jose Zepeda (5-0, 4 KOs), meet in a scheduled six round bout on Thursday May 19, at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Irvine, Calif. Kendall Holt (27-4, 15 KOs) knocked out Coachella’s Julio Diaz (38-7, 27 KOs) with a left hook in the third round on Friday. The battle of former world champions took place at Chumash Casino.

Several thousand fans attended the UFC Gym in Corona on Saturday. Several prominent mixed martial arts stars made appearances including Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, BJ Penn, Urijah Faber, Leonard Garcia,  ring girl Arianny Celeste and television host Kenda Perez. People traveled from as far as Arizona to attend the event.

Mexico’s Mariana Juarez (28-5-3, 13 KOs) is making her first WBC flyweight world title defense on Saturday, May 21 in Morelia, Mexico against Uruguay’s undefeated Gabriela Bouvier (6-0-1). Juarez captured the WBC world title last March in Mexico City against Italy’s Simona Galassi.

WBC junior bantamweight titleholder Tomas Rojas (35-12-1, 23 KOs) defends against fellow Mexican boxer Juan Jose Montes (19-1, 12 KOs) on Saturday, May 21 in Chiapas, Mexico.

Multi-divisional world champion Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KOs) travels to Moscow, Russia on Saturday to fight Dennis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KOs) in a cruiserweight match scheduled for 12 rounds. It will not be televised in the U.S.

Colombia’s Joel Julio (36-4, 31 KOs) fights Anges Adjaho (25-5, 14 KOs) in a welterweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds on Friday, May 20 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Mexico’s Cristian Mijares (42-6-2) defended the IBF junior bantamweight world title against fellow Mexican Carlos Rueda (16-5-1, 13 KOs) on Saturday in Durango, Mexico. Mijares won by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.

Travis Walker (36-6-1, 28 KOs) beat Alonzo Butler (28-2-1, 21 KOs) by majority decision after 10 rounds. The battle of heavyweight contenders took place Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.

Former national amateur champion Seniesa Estrada won her pro debut by unanimous decision over Maria Ruiz (0-3-2) on Friday at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez. Estrada won all four rounds of the flyweight bout.

Sharif Bogere (20-0, 12 KOs) beat Fernando Beltran (24-5, 16 KOs) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds on Friday at Buffalo Bills Casino in Primm, Nevada. Also, Seth Mitchell (22-0-1, 16 KOs) knocked out Evans Quinn (20-6-1, 18 KOs) at 2:38 of round one of a heavyweight bout.
