Kaliesha West Ready To Fight In Mexico & Other Female Action
WBO bantamweight titleholder Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West signed a three-year promotion contract with Mexican promoter Hector Garcia. Her first fight will take place in Mexico on August 20, according to West.
“We don’t know where our first fight will take place, maybe Guadalajara, Mexico,” said West, 23 of Moreno Valley. “It will be a title fight on August 20.”
Garcia has a number of female fighters in his promotion company including the much heralded Ana Maria Torres, the WBC junior bantamweight world titleholder and Arely Mucino, the IBF flyweight world titleholder.
Ana Maria Torres (25-3-3) and WBC junior featherweight titleholder Jackie Nava (24-3-3) of Mexico will collide a second time for the WBC Diamondbelt in the bantamweight division on July 30 in Chiapas, Mexico. Their first encounter ended in a draw this past April in Veracruz, Mexico.
West last fought to a draw against Northern California’s Ava Knight this past June 18, in Pico Rivera, California. For the Moreno Valley boxer West it was the only opportunity available to protect her hold on the title. Thus, she signed with Garcia’s group who assured her four fights a year.
Carina Moreno will be fighting on August 27 in San Jose, California. Moreno, a former junior flyweight world titleholder, is coming off two consecutive losses in world title bouts. But both were fought in other countries and ended in decision losses.
Mexico’s Janeth Perez (12-0-1) and Colombia’s Yolis Franco (13-7-3) fight on Saturday July 16 for the vacant WBA bantamweight world title. Perez, 21, fights out of Zapopan near Guadalajara. The title fight takes place in Mazatlan.
Speaking of bantamweights, Zulina Munoz (28-1-2), and perhaps the most protected female boxer in Mexico, fights Kandy Sandoval (5-1). Munoz and Sandoval fight tonight in Mexico City.
Christina Ruiz (6-3-1, 4 KOs) of Texas fights New York’s Alicia Ashley (16-9-1) for the vacant WBC junior featherweight title on Saturday July 23, in New York City. Ruiz knocked out the much heralded Emily Klinefelter in three rounds in her last fight in February. Ashley is a slick and fast moving boxer with a ton of experience. The title fight takes place at the Hunts Point Produce Market in Bronx.
On Saturday July 23, in Guadalajara, Mexico, Irma Sanchez (19-5-1) fights Carlota Santos (5-2-3) for the interim WBA junior flyweight title. Sanchez fights for Hector Garcia Boxing Promotions.
WBC flyweight world titleholder Mariana “Barbie” Juarez (29-5-3, 14 KOs) defends against Japan’s Asami Shikasho (5-2, 3 KOs) on Saturday Aug. 27, in Mexico City. This will be Juarez’s second flyweight world title defense. Juarez is also a former junior bantamweight world champion.
