Bernstein Looking Forward To Weekend Showtime Fights
Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Bernstein, who will be on the announce teams for both of the Showtime boxing cards this weekend, says he expects “explosive” action on both nights.
On Friday, February 17th, Bernstein will host Shobox: The New Generation with Steve Farhood providing analysis. That card features two exciting Puerto Rican based fighters on the verge of title shots. Al commented: “Both Thomas Dulorme (who fights Aris Ambriz) and Jonathon Gonzalez (who battles Billy Lyell) are excellent offensive fighters and combined they have 23 wins by stoppage in 27 matches. They can both punch, but Gonzalez is especially tough. Billy Lyell fought Julio Cesar Chavez very well even in losing and he is a true middleweight coming down to 154 pounds. That match could be a classic Shobox showdown.”
Bernstein will travel from the Chumash Casino in California to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Saturday Feb.18th Showtime Championship Boxing card. On that show, Al will serve as analyst, working with Gus Johnson and Antonio Tarver at ringside. One time top 10 pound for pound fighter Paul Williams returns to the ring following his controversial win over Erislandy Lara. Williams takes on Nobuhiro Ishida, who has two straight first round KO wins, one over James Kirkland. Also on the card Tavoris Cloud defends is light heavyweight title against Gabriel Campillo.
Al highlights the importance of the Williams-Ishida match. “Paul Williams is an 11 year veteran at 30 years of age and his boxing biological clock is ticking. He has been vulnerable in recent fights and he needs a dominant performance in this match. For Ishida at age 3, time is a big issue, his last two wins have been impressive, but a loss to Williams could end his chances to again fight for a world title. Both men have a lot on the line, I think that will result in an exciting and unpredictable fight. Both men are volume punchers, so all out action is likely.”
