Patty Alcivar Wants To Close The Show in Olszewski Rematch

It is the dream of every professional fighter when they lace up the gloves to win a world title.

Queens, NY native Patty Alcivar (7-1, 3 KOs) realized part of that dream this past March when she defeated Eileen Olszewski (7-5-2) by unanimous decision to win the NYS women’s flyweight title. “I always had a plan that my ultimate goal was to win a world championship,” Alcivar stated at the time, “so this is the first step.”

Tonight, Alcivar looks to complete that plan when she meets Olszewski again, this time for the vacant IFBA world flyweight (112lbs) title. The championship tilt will headline a full card of fights being promoted by new kid on the block Uprising Promotions. This will be their third promotion and it will again take place at the Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City, Queens, NY.

Alcivar is facing the same opponent she defeated just six months ago. “I believe Olszewski got the opportunity because she has international experience and is a former two-time world champion,” the petite boxer explained after a recent sparring session at the Trinity Boxing Club in Manhattan. “Our first fight was an active, exciting bout, but I won a unanimous decision. Without the opportunity of competing for a world title, there really is no reason for me to take a rematch.”

The first match was fought over eight rounds and this time the boxers will battle over a ten round distance.

Because her trainers urged her to stay in the gym, and she is an avowed fitness buff, Alcivar does not view the extra two rounds as a significant challenge. “Because I always stay close to my fighting weight and participate in a variety of fitness activities, I’m always in shape and I get stronger as the fight goes on.”

One clear tactical adjustment taken from the first fight will be focusing on closing the show. “In the later rounds during the first fight there was a point where I had Olszewski against the ropes and for some reason I stepped back and didn’t finish,” Alcivar explained. “I don’t want to let that happen again.”

As fight night approaches, a prepared Alcivar, trained by Martin Snow and Angel Castro, views the bout with confidence. “Olszewski is a skillful and experienced fighter, she’s gone ten rounds and fought in Europe. I keep that in mind, but I don’t think she matches my ability at all,” she said.
