Jennings Looks Sharp, Stops Spilka at MSG
Bryant Jennings had a bit too much hand speed, timing and athleticism for game foe Artur Szpilka on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater. Jennings boxed smartly against the Pole, who had the edge in rooters, but couldn't tag the Philly boxer enough to sway the judges. Jennings, now 18-0, got the nod, via TKO10 after his left hook had the Pole sagging down the ropes. He fought on, but a Jennings flurry ended the matter.
Jennings, now promoted by Gary Shaw and Antonio Leonard, didn't go overboard in looking to do damage, preferring to box smart and a bit safe early, as Spilka most often was the aggressor, looking to be first and land something big. The lefty Pole, now 16-1, hit the deck in the sixth, and rose, with 32 seconds to go. He managed to last the round, after a left to the body dropped him. Jennings wanted to end it the next round, but Spilka hung tough. He was backing up much more by round nine, but still returning fire, still looking to land a game-changer left. He moved his head enough to deflect the nastiest Jennings launches, and used his legs to get some space and breathing room, too. Spilka, though, went down in round ten, and looked beat walking to the ref. A doctor walked up on the apron to end it, and then the ref halted it, as Jennings whaled away on a near defenseless Pole.
A left hook did the damage, and then Jennings unloaded the kitchen sink to end it. The end came via TKO at 2:20. Jennings had won seven rounds on all three judges' cards, FYI.
HBO showed the scrap, right before a Mikey Garcia-Juan Carlos Burgos main event.
