RIP, Reporter Marcus Henry
Some sad news to report, as the fight game lost a respected member of the media, with the passing of reporter Marcus Henry, who wrote about boxing, among other topics, for the Long Island newspaper Newsday.
I worked with Henry for a spell, in 2003, at Newsday and never found him to be anything but upbeat and totally professional gentleman.
His leaves behind his wife, Carmela.
Here is the release sent out by the Boxing Writers Association of America early Wednesday afternoon:
It is with great sadness and regret that the BWAA acknowledges the passing of New York Newsday reporter and BWAA member Marcus Henry at age 41. Marcus was a warm and welcome presence at ringside and his absence will be felt. The thoughts and condolences of the BWAA are with his family and friends at this time.
Hank Winnicki, the sports editor at the paper, said that Henry was found at his residence, in Hempstead, Long Island, by a neighbor on Tuesday evening.
“We are stunned and devastated at Newsday,” Winnicki said of the popular journalist, who savored this time of year, with March Madness unfolding. “Everyone agrees, Marcus was a great guy, nobody ever had anything bad to say about him. He was a hard worker, and an important part of the staff. He was a real pro. We're all going to miss him.”
An autopsy to determine cause of death will be performed on Thursday.
An obituary will be posted on Newsday.com, after arrangements are solidified.
Here is Marcus' bio on the Newsday website:
