Pay-Per-Pew: Miguel Vazquez and Mickey Bey Fight A Stinker
Mayweather Promotions’ boxer Mickey Bey got a sweet opp, as a result of who he knows, and took on Miguel Vazquez in the second PPV bout, on the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana undercard, on Saturday night.
Vazquez is a pretty darned fan unfriendly fighter, and his showing in this outing was no different. Bey, not a great initiator, was not a great choice to complement Vazquez, and this fight lacked drama, lacked a collision of styles and tactics and generally underwhelmed. After 12 rounds, about ten rounds after most watchers checked out, we went to the scorecards. Bey won by scores of 115-113 for Bey, 115-113 for Vazquez, 119-109 for Bey, a split nod.
Steve Farhood saw it 116-112 for Vazquez.
Vazquez went 89-404 to 81-394 for the winner.
The fans, they didn’t win. This fight should not have been on a pay per view, and that it was told you, the fan, how some people think of you.
Bey was 20-1-1, and came from Ohio, and lives in Vegas. The IBF 135 champ Vazquez was 34-3, and lives in LA.
In the first, Vazquez moved, and landed a long jab to keep the distance he wanted. In the second, Bey was second, but tried to initiate a bit more. Vazquez is one of the smartest, slickest defenders in the sport and he did that well in the second. In the third, Bey landed some jabs and this round looked much like the fourth. They banged heads and it hurt the nose of Vaz in the third. Both men showed some hand speed, and patience and an aversion to being hit through five.
In the seventh, Bey tried to land but the defensive wiz Vazquez slipped too smartly, and then held. Vaquez was up 77-75 through eight. My interest ended long before that. They both did what they did before for the next several rounds, and we went to the cards. Mercifully, as Mauro Ranallo noted…
