Andrade Pulls Out of Dec. 13 Bout With Jermell Charlo
This is a bit of a weird one, even for boxing. Demetrius Andrade (26-0 with 14 KOs; age 26) is rising in prominence, with the feeling among many smarts that Rhode Island hitter could and should be a more featured player in the game.
The boxer apparently feels the same way, and wants higher billing and mo money…and he sent word about his disapleasure by making himself unavailable for a fight he’d been booked for, on Dec. 13, against Jermell Charlo.
This seems another case of what has become a signature of this year in boxing…Andrade seems caught in a swirl between his ambitions, his worth, his promoters, his management, broadcast entities, etc. We hear that he’s looking to perhaps cement a new deal with another company which he thinks properly appreciates his talent.
So when and where and for who he next fights, is, I think, in flux. Meanwhile, here’s the release Showtime sent out touching on the no-longer-on-the-slate Andrade/Charlo bout.
DEMETRIUS ANDRADE UNAVAILABLE FOR DEC. 13 TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST JERMELL CHARLO
NEW YORK(Nov. 17, 2014) – Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime have been informed that WBO Junior Middleweight World Champion Demetrius Andrade is unavailable for his scheduled world title defense against Jermell Charlo on Saturday, Dec. 13 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
At this time, it is unclear whether Andrade vs. Charlo will be rescheduled for a later date. Discussions are ongoing, and additional details will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will be headlined by the welterweight showdown between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander with a co-feature pitting Interim WBA Welterweight World Champion Keith Thurman against undefeated challenger Leonard Bundu.
Abner Mares and Victor Ortiz are also scheduled to appear on Dec. 13 in separate bouts. Additional details about the live SHOWTIME and SHOWTIME EXTREME telecasts will be announced shortly.
