WHAT IF: Terence Crawford Fought Adrien Broner?
A fictional fight, which could get made in the fantasy universe, or maybe, just maybe, if the political walls come down and Al’s guys get in with Bob’s guys, is an Adrien Broner versus Terence Crawford clash.
Twitter didn’t exactly break from all the Bud-love on Saturday night, but I was seeing the word “special” attached to the Nebraskan, and I heard the estimable Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman hurl superlatives at him and analysts like Frank Lotierzo and Lee Wylie are similarly gush-y.
I reached out to AB’s coach, Mike Stafford, and asked him what he thought of Bud’s outing versus former journeyman type Ray Beltran (5-3-1 in last nine outings), who graduated to contender status when he performed smartly against Ricky Burns in September 2013. Whaddya think of the Crawford decision win, Mike?
“Good boxing,” the Cinci-based tutor, who told me that his bratty and flashy hitter will fight in February or early March.
And what about if Crawford and Broner were to get it on?
“Be a good fight,” he stated. “But Adrien hits way harder than any lightweight, and he cuts off the ring better than these guys, so there you go.”
And, of course, the discussion is probably moot, because of the moats of capitalism and politicks, right? “Who knows, this is boxing, anything can happen?” he said, sagely.
I saw one or two Tweeters who aren’t ALL in on the Crawford bandwagon, who noted that his last win, against Yuriorkis Gamboa, came against someone perhaps better suited for a lighter weight class…and that Beltran is solid and durable, but not an ‘A’ grade guy. Stafford is of the same mind on Gamboa. “Yes, he’s real small,” he said. “And Beltran has a sparring partner mentality.” Oh, but wasn’t Ricky Burns a step up in competition, and a telling showing? “A little, not much,” he said.
So, there is still room on the Crawford bandwagon for one more passenger…Mike Stafford doesn’t want to join. Talk to me, readers..TC vs. AB, who would win, and how?
