Gennady Golovkin Team Talks Martin Murray and Others

LOS ANGELES—Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has stormed the boxing world with his two-fisted attack, which has sparked writers to label the middleweight world champion with numerous adjectives.

Perhaps the most fitting came from his promoter Tom Loeffler of K-2 Promotions: “He’s the most dangerous man on the planet with 18 consecutive knockouts,” said Loeffler to the crowd of media at the Palm Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon.

Golovkin (31-0, 28 Kos) seeks to remain undefeated and retain his WBA, IBO and interim WBC world title when he faces Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) of the United Kingdom on Feb. 21, in Monaco. This past year many voted him Fighter of the Year, which could be seen as confirmation that the media views him as the most dangerous fighter too.

The middleweight division has multiple world titlists but most experts agree the real deal is Golovkin. And other middleweights of stature fear him.

“When Peter Quillin says there is not enough draw for him to fight… Ask him about Gennady selling out the StubHub. What does he have to do, sell out Dodger Stadium to prove what he’s done?” asked Abel Sanchez trainer of Golovkin.

Few give credence to Quillin’s assertions that Golovkin does not draw. On the contrary, Quillin does not draw and could not sell out the StubHub on his own name. But boxing politics being what they are, we probably will never know if Quillin can survive a Golovkin onslaught.

Sanchez named a few fighters that could prove exciting matchups for his fighter, including Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Carl Froch, Andre Ward and especially Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“The fight I’ve always wanted to see is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against Gennady. The reason being is back in 1991 my kid Terry Norris was offered to fight his father. He backed out. I would like to see their two styles, I think they would mesh really well,” said Sanchez about the matchup that almost took place last summer. “And Julio being as big as he’s going to be and having the chin his daddy gave him would make for a 12 round memorable, memorable fight.”

Golovkin doesn’t think about those possibilities. Only Murray interests the Kazakhstani.

“My focus is on Martin Murray right now. I think he will be one of my biggest challenges of my career. He’s stronger, he’s bigger and faster, and I will be ready for him,” Golovkin said. “I think it’s a great idea for the European style and Mexican style to be in Monaco and for everybody. I want to thank my fans and everybody.”

Though Golovkin doesn’t bother talking about future possibilities the boxing media and hardcore fans can’t help themselves. Maybe because Murray has less than a dozen knockouts and fights out of Europe. Few remember that Golovkin seemingly came out of nowhere several years ago from Europe.

Murray fought to a draw with long time champion Felix Sturm, who now fights at super middleweight. He lost to former middleweight champion Sergio Martinez by decision, despite knocking down the Argentine slickster in Buenos Aires.

“Martin Murray went 12 rounds with Felix Sturm and 12 with Sergio Martinez in front of 40,000 fans and a lot of people think he won. He’s not going to be scared of anything Gennady throws,” Sanchez said.

The media in Los Angeles was only concerned with the future possibilities.
