Russell Jr Stops Gonzalez In Round Four
WBC champ Jhonny Gonzalez defended his feather crown against fleet-fisted Gary Russell Jr, in a puncher vs boxer scrap presented on Showtime, from the Palms in Las Vegas.
Ah, but who is the puncher? Russell on Saturday night knocked Gonzo down the end of the third, to start the fourth and then had the ref hop in to end things at the start of the fourth, as he hit the deck again.
37 seconds elapsed and Tony Weeks halted the event.
Russell drew scorn for taking on low tier comp coming up and this goes toward shoring up his rep.
The 25-1 (14 Ks) GRJ, who lost to am ace Vasyl Lomachenko, said a bad fit with a strength and conditioning coach messed him up for the Loma bout.
In the first, the lefty Russ snapped a jab hard and repeatedly. The 57-8 (48 Ks, been stopped three times) Gonzo is a power hitter and wants to land a home run ball, but Russ is a pretty slick boxer. In the second, Russell showed his hand speed edge. In round three, down went Gonzo. A counter straight left/solid right hook, delivered after slipping a right, did the job.
Down he went again in the fourth, at the start of the round. A left hook clipped Gonzo’s chin. More pummeling and the ref stepped in.
