Salita Likes Chances For Young Heavy Perea, And “Big Baby” Miller Next Week
Just because their names are not so known to the masses, that doesn’t mean that fights involving some of the lower-on-the-card guys fighting tonight, in Brooklyn, aren’t just as meaningful to those involved.
Like, say, the Ytalo Perea-Adam Kownacki fight. The scrap, to unfold tonight, at Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, before the Amir Khan-Chris Algieri main event, pits two young gun heavies.
The Pole Kownacki is the favorite, ostensibly, at 9-0, with 9 KOs. But Dmitriy Salita, the promoter for his foe, Ecuador’s Ytalo Perea (6-1-1 with 4 KOs), has his fingers tightly crossed that his kid gets the W tonight.
A young promoter, like a Salita, he needs some breaks to fall his way. Some of his young guns, he needs them to spring the odd upset, because, c’mon, he’s not an Al Haymon, or a Bob Arum, or a Joe DeGuardia…his guy is often going to be the B side, even the B- side, and has to win, and keep winning, to get to A side status.
Salita talked to me about Perea’s chances. “Ytalo is very talented fighter and he’s young, he made some mistakes early in his career and that’s why he is not undefeated,” Salita told me. “I hope that he learned from that loss. I signed Ytalo late last year because I know that as a young fighter you can sometimes make mistakes, let the noise of the world get to you, neglect training etc. But I saw a very talented fighter who accomplished a whole lot as a 19 year old kid. He won the Pan Am games in spectacular fashion and fought in the Olympics so the potential is tremendous. Ytalo has his ways of training and doing things…but I think he took this fight seriously. He did the bulk of his training in Ecuador and has been here for last few days training with Tommy Gallagher, the man that was his first pro trainer here in the U.S. Tommy keeps it real, I talked to him today and he told me that his weight is down and he is looking sharp. I look forward to seeing my man Ytalo represent on Friday, the sky is the limit for him.”
Salita’s cruiserweight didn’t get a W last week, in Russia, so hopefully, he’s thinking, Perea gets the Salita Squad back on a winning track.
“Junior Wright (now 13-1-1) fought for a world title against an Olympic Gold Medalist, one of the best fighters in the world, in only his 14th pro fight, said Salita. “He was very good in spots but Rakhim Chakhiev proved to be the better fighter that night. Junior is not at all hurt and is grateful for the opportunity and he called me to tell me he is back in the gym today. It’s obviously disappointing but I believe Junior will learn from this experience and become a better fighter as a result of this.” Wright got stopped via body shot in round 8, in Moscow…
And of course, that young promoter, he has to be looking on that bright side, keep upbeat..Salita ended on a high note..
“And next week Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller is looking to make some noise in Brooklyn as well!”
Heavyweight Miller, co-promoted with Greg Cohen, fights on a Salita promotion on June 4, against 15-4 Damon McCreary. If by chance Perea doesn’t get the W tonight, there’s always next week. It’s the way it has to be for the young climber promoter…
