Back After 19 Months, Bute Smashes Di Luisa

Lucian Bute fought for the first time in 19 months, meeting Andrea Di Luisa in Quebec, the main event on a PBC/NBC Sports Network show Saturday night.

Bute was promising and built smartly, but then ran into ruffian Brit Carl Froch a couple years ago, and that sapped his momentum. A win here would be a start in a surge to get some buzz back. He delivered; a left dropped DL in the fourth. He got up, ate flurries and his corner threw in the towel after Bute basted him.

To be fair, DL looked small and in over his head a bit, so this fight was fine as a rust shedder for the victor.

Bute went 64-158 to 35-205 for the Italian.

The end came at 1:53 of the fourth. After, the winner spoke to Kenny Rice. Bute said he is back, and liked watching his power shot which dropped the loser. He said that Adonis Stevenson came to his dressing room to wish him well before. He was not asked about what’s next.

The 31-2 lefty, age 35, was born in Romania and calls Canada home. The 17-2 DL is 33.

In the first, Bute showed himself to be on a higher plane. In the second, more Bute. In the third, Bute clanged one-twos, and then added the uppercut. To round four..Bute went to the body, snapped a jab, and the underdog, who looked a weight class smaller, showed a cross-arm D. Then he hit the deck, off a left. He was up at six…Then Bute hopped on him. The corner threw in the towel…

Easy work for the home towner…
