Maduma and Hooker Scrap At MSG, Hooker Gets W
In the opener at MSG, Ghislain Maduma met Maurice Hooker in a junior welter tangle, set for 10 or less. After ten of decent action, including times when both got buzzed, we went to the cards: the judges called it 95-93-Hooker, 95-93 Maduma..and the tiebreaker was 95-94…for Hooker.
Heavy boos were heard..
After, the winner said, “I think the fight went a good pace and Maduma was a good fighter. He came prepared to fight. I knew I had him from the first round when I hit him with my left. By the fourth round, I grew confident that I was in the lead once I dropped him. But I grew too confident I think and that is when he caught me by surprise in the sixth round. I wasn’t as focused as I should have been so I made sure to listen to my corner and keep him at a distance with my jab for the remaining rounds. I feel that I am ready for a bigger fight and feel confident I can make a statement at 140 pounds. I would love a shot at Broner or any Golden Boy Promotions fighter at 140 pounds, like Antonio Orozco, I can take him.”
Maduma, entering at 17-1, lives in Montreal and is with Eye of the Tiger. Hooker was 18-0-2, and lives in Dallas; he’s with Greg Cohen.
The two men were on ever terms into the fourth…Hooker threw one, a sharp one, with his left hand, the crowd liked in that fourth. He came forward, and sent Mad to the mat, off a right. His length edge was speaking, nastily..Then we saw Hooker get tagged and hurt in the sixth. He almost went down. They fought on after that back and forth..
To round nine…Maduma was maybe more energized. Hooker was on the back foot more, more looking to gobble oxygen. In the tenth, Hooker expended the energy he had left.
The cards spoke, then…
