NYPD vs. FDNY BOXING RETURNS FOR ANNUAL BATTLE OF THE BADGES, PRESENTED BY HOOTERS AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

New York, NY, October 27, 2014 – The decade’s long rivalry that began in 1982 continues on Saturday, November 22 when the NYPD and FDNY step into the Garden boxing ring in the annual Battle of the Badges, presented by Hooters. The full night of boxing will take place in The Theater at Madison Square Garden with proceeds benefiting both the Atlas Cops & Kids Boxing Program and the Building Homes for Heroes Organization. Additionally, in support of our troops, 1,000 free tickets will be given away to active members of the United States armed forces.

Tickets for the Battle of the Badges are priced at $65.00, $50.00, and $30.00 and are currently on-sale. Tickets can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.thegarden.com. Fans can purchase tickets in designated locations for the FDNY and NYPD.

The event will feature 12 three-round matches with New York City bragging rights on the line. The 32-year rivalry is tied with 15 victories and one draw for each team.

FDNY head boxing coach, Bobby McGuire said “It is with a great sense of pride, appreciation and gratitude for our armed forces that the FDNY Bravest Boxing team will donate their proceeds from this event to Building Homes for Heroes. We are honored to use the funds raised to help build a new mortgage free, handicap accessible home for US Army Corp. Jessie Murphree. Corp. Murphree lost both legs and suffered a traumatic brain injury when his humvee struck an anti tank mine in Afghanistan. We feel like we owe the members of our armed forces for the sacrifices they have made and if we can help with

a little “spirited” competition, so be it.”

McGuire continued, “Remember, this series is all tied up after 31 years….both teams have won 15 matches with one draw. NYC bragging rights are on the line and I can guarantee that it’s going to be another exciting night of boxing for a really great cause. Come on out on Saturday, November 22 and help us help our heroes.”

“Please come out and support New York City cops and firefighter’s fighting to give New York City youth a place to go to be champs in the ring as well as in the community,” said Pat Russo, executive director, NYPD boxing. “Proceeds from this event will continue to support the Atlas Cops and Kids Boxing programs.”

The FDNY boxing team has, once again, teamed up with Building Homes for Heroes and will donate proceeds from the event to help support the brave men and women of the military who have returned home from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars with severe wounds and disabilities, with the goal to build homes for families in dire need.

The NYPD will continue to support Atlas Cops and Kids with proceeds from the event. Atlas Cops and Kids runs three community boxing gyms in Berry Houses and Park Hill, Staten Island and Flatbush Gardens, Brooklyn, which offer tutoring, resume, and career assistance free of charge to youths from 12-21 years old.
