George Kimball (1943-2011)
The 1986 recipient of the Nat Fleischer Award for Excellence in Boxing Journalism, George Kimball spent a quarter-century as a sports columnist for the Boston Herald before retiring in 2005. A veteran of well over 400 world title bouts, Kimball covered boxing all over the world since the eras of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, and was the only journalist to cover every fight of Marvelous Marvin Hagler’s middleweight reign from start to finish.? For 14 years he wrote the weekly ‘America at Large’ column for Dublin’s Irish Times, and was a columnist for TheSweetScience starting in 2004.
Kimball was the author of eight books, including the acclaimed FOUR KINGS: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing, as well as a collection of his more recnt work, MANLY ART. He was also the editor (with fellow Fleischer laureate John Schulian) of both the Library of America anthology AT THE FIGHTS: American Writers on Boxing and THE FIGHTER STILL REMAINS: A Celebration of Boxing in Poetry and Song from Ali to Zevon. Kimball received numerous awards for his boxing, golf, baseball, and Olympic coverage, and also covered the New England Patriots and the NFL from 1970-2005. He had two children, Darcy (1984), of Montgomery Center, Vermont and Teddy (1988) of Brooklyn, three stepsons and four grandchildren. When he and his wife, Dr. Marge Marash Kimball, were married in 2004, the ceremony was performed by the Reverend George Foreman. The couple lived in New York City.
