“MONEY SHOTS:” Mayweather Goes Off on De La Hoya, His Father, ESPN’s Smith
Floyd Mayweather has been a busy beaver following his around the world trek two weeks ago. Money went off on Oscar De La Hoya, his own dad, and ESPNer Stephan A. Smith on his preferred talk platform, the website Fight Hype.
Dad got hammered for speaking out of turn (“It’s gonna happen. That fight’s gonna happen. Trust me,” Floyd Mayweather Sr. told Fight HYpe about a Floyd-Manny scrap. “That fight’s definitely gonna happen. It’s a fight for the world, man, right there. It’s the biggest fight that has ever been in life, so like I said, man, that fight’s gonna happen”) and Floyd said his pops risks excommunication, out of The Money Team, and his corner, for going on record as saying he thinks a Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight will happen. “My father is totally wrong,” said the son, airing out dirty laundry in a most public fashion.
He then went a step further, and kicked a sleeping dog, the Manny-was-on-PEDs story line. “You know what’s so crazy? I just look at the situation like this, ever since Ariza left Pacquiao, he hasn’t had a knockout. What a coincidence!” he told Fight Hype. He continued: “The thing is this, some of the people that used to work with Manny Pacquiao are now working with me, so the best thing for Pacquiao to do is be quiet before he really gets exposed and I tell some things that he don’t want me to tell.” Hm, so is Alex Ariza on his payroll…is he giving secrets up from the old Pacman playbook, if that is true?
He then leveled the guns at Smith, who has been in his corner in years past. He reacted to Smith saying he thinks just maybe Floyd is a quackier, a ducker, someone who is being the avoider, the one most singular reason why a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight isn’t happening. Floyd told FH that he doesn’t five a fly eff what Smith thinks…and then spent a couple minutes showing he indeed does.
Oscar De La Hoya also went under the scrutiny microscope; Floyd calked him “disloyal,” and a “piece of excrement,” saying that Richard Schaefer built up Golden Boy, the ex fighter didn’t. Oh, and he added that the man he beat in 2007, and then worked with in varying capacities on events GBP put together for Mayeather extravaganzas is a “snake.” Mayweather talked about his next fight, in May, and the possibility that Canelo Alvarez will usurp the recent tradion of “Money in May.” He also said he’d be starting MMA promotions, which no doubt has Dana White antsy, or maybe salivating, because he could draw some buzz over to UFC if he decided to do some sort of alliance with “Money.” Then, he finished with a little nugget, that he might try and do some fights on “free CBS.” It isn’t clear if he means one of his fights, or some of the boxers under his promotional umbrella, however.
Oscar De La Hoya didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Thoughts readers? Do you see any of this as valuable intel…or merely babbling and churning, to stay in the news cycle?
