Roach On What He Thinks Main Reason Floyd Hasn’t Embraced Manny Fight
Freddie Roach was asked what he thought was the top reason why we haven’t seen Floyd Mayweather go after that Manny Pacquiao fight with gusto, sending a message with words and deeds and actions that he wants to give the fans what they want, this Super Fight. Me, I have thought over the course of the last four or so years that Floyd simply doesn’t want to renew acquaintance with his ex promoter, Bob Arum, with whom no love was lost–or found, actually–when they parted ways in 2006.
For that reason, more than any other, I thought he harbored some hesitance which made him not seem to truly want to embrace the mega-match with Pacquiao. Why? Because he didn’t want to help line the pockets of a guy he didn’t dig…to put it mildly.
Roach told me he has another choice for impediment number one in Floyd’s mind: his undefeated record. Others share that sentiment…ex HBO boss Seth Abraham dealt with Floyd on his way up the ladder, and was struck by the importance “Money” attached to a stain-free record. Dedham Freddie, besides, wondered aloud when we chatted the other day if it isn’t actually Arum and Floyd advisor Al Haymon who have a mutual enmity thing going which serves to help keep The Fight from getting to the finish line.
“The record is VERY important to him, the record, that’s the most important thing…but (Floyd does think he will beat Pacquiao), oh yeah, of course,” Roach said when we pondered why Floyd hasn’t moved heaven and earth to book the biggest money-maker the fight world has ever known. Still a mystery to me..and hell, all but about four people on this planet, right? I mean, if Floyd thinks he beats Manny, doesn’t that fear of the loss of the 0 lessen? Anyways…
“The thing about that fight is, we know Floyd’s the A side,” Roach continued. “Negotiations shouldn’t be that hard. Showtime and HBO have (co-produced a megafight) once before.”
Makes sense, does Dedham Freddie. But you can’t make sense of a mystery in which only limited clues are available and the stories offered by the players change all the time. Your guess, reader, is as good as mine as to why Pacquiao-Mayweather hasn’t been made….
