Golovkin Trainer Sanchez Aims Barbs At Cotto

Miguel Cotto is a Hall of Fame talent, that is pretty inarguable, I think. But the Puerto Rican hitter is drawing some Twitter fire from those who want the 34-year-old to put his WBC middleweight title on the line in June, against the man many of those naysayers state is THE MAN at 160 pounds, Gennady Golovkin.

Yes, many of the masses, judging by the query I put out on Thursday night, seek a Cotto vs. Golovkin showdown, which they believe has Big Drama Show written all over it. Indeed, many of the respondents see the drama falling in favor of the Kazahk, who looked sharp and nasty in walking down Martin Murray in Monaco last Saturday, scoring a TKO11 victory.

Cotto, meanwhile, was quoted as saying he doesn’t make moves according to the whims of a sanctioning body. The WBC put out a release on Thursday which declared that Cotto can take an interim fight, but then, should he win, put his belt on the line against WBC “Interim” champ Golovkin. Meanwhile, names like Tim Bradley, Erislandy Lara, and K9 Bundrage, none of whom campaign aat 160 right now, have been bandied about as possibles for Cotto’s next, which is presumed to be slated for June. (Or maybe not, as Frank Lotierzo points out, why not if you’re Cotto, wait to see who wins #MayweatherPacquiao, and choose next after that shoe drops?)

Golovkin is the gentleman warrior sort and prefers to let his words speak in the ring, so he’s not going to lobby to get Cotto to clash with him. But Triple G trainer Abel Sanchez is never shy with an opinion. He asked TSS this: “Cotto is saying he is afraid of Golovkin? Nobody runs my career, he says, but when the WBC gave him the opportunity and he agreed they did run it. Now it’s GGG, not a broken-down fighter, and he is not willing to live up to his word. What is that, fear? If Cotto does not want to be a middleweight, then give up the belt, so real men can fight for it.”

Ouch. Strong flurry from Honest Abel.

Strong words from Sanchez. I’ve seen a school of thought that at this stage of his career, Cotto deserves the benefit of the doubt, and shouldn’t be forced into a tangle with Golovkin. As for being “scared” that hasn’t been his way till now, so why start now? Because, some posters say, he simply knows 160, a real 160, is simply potentially too damaging to him.
