Crawford Surely in the Mix For Pacquiao Comeback
He won 2014 Fighter of the Year, courtesy the BWAA, and he’s been knocked down the pins they set up for him.
The WBO 140 champ Terence Crawford (26-0, with 18 Kos) has another pin, in the form of Dierry Jean, that he wants to topple, this Saturday, in Nebraska, and on HBO; after that, he’s aiming at an XL pin.
Manny Pacquiao’s first fight back after that loss to “TBE,” and subsequent shoulder surgery, that would be a perfect slot for Crawford, says the Nebraskan’s manager, Cameron Dunkin. “What we want is Pacquiao,” Dunkin told me. “That fight makes him a star. Are we the lead dog in that hunt? No, Amir Khan is. But we’re very much in the mix. If it’s not Khan, we’re sitting right there. Of course, Juan Manuel Marquez says he’ll be coming back…But I think they want someone credible for Manny’s first fight back, and I think we can win that fight. Fighter of the Year, up for an ESPY…packing in 15,000 fans to see him fight…if he wins that fight, Terence, wow, he’s a real fighter!”
Dunkin is a straight shooter, he’s not prone to excessive hyperbole. He knows his kid is a star now, and just needs that signature bout to get to a whole ‘nother level. Yeah, a win over Manny, even this Manny, that would do that…
