Jessie Magdaleno, Trevor McCumby Crush Overmatched Foes in Phoenix
Magdaleno, Trevor McCumby Crush Overmatched Foes – Top Rank prospects Jessie Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs) and Trevor McCumby (22-0, 17) had little trouble disposing of their overmatched opponents in Saturday’s Top Rank promotion on UniMas from the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.
Magdaleno, from Las Vegas, dominated from the get-go before stopping Rey Perez with a body shot in the seventh round. Perez, now 20-8 (5) was subbing for fellow Filipino Edward Mansito who was unable to secure a visa. Magdaleno, who competes in the talent-rich super featherweight division, is in line to fight the winner of the WBO title match between Nonito Donaire and Zsolt Bedak at Manila on April 23.

McCumby, a light heavyweight, stopped James “Boogie” Freeman in the second round with a body shot. It was the fourth straight loss for Freeman who dipped to 9-8, but the first setback for him in which he failed to go the distance. The 23-year old McCumby has made steady progress since turning pro in 2010. Born and raised in Chicago, he currently resides in Glendale, Arizona.
In an undercard fight of note, local product Carlos Castro advanced to 15-0 (6) with a hard-fought unanimous decision in a 6-round super featherweight match with spunky Rafael Reyes.
