Frampton Outpoints Quigg – Roughly 20,000 fans provided an electric atmosphere for the main event at the Manchester Arena as Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton finally did battle to determine who is the best Super Bantamweight on the British Isles. Frampton is ranked #1 and Quigg #2 by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and both men are putting up their respective IBF and WBO World Championships for a title unification bout.

The sold out crowd made this match one of the hottest tickets in British boxing, and it was the first time a bout at Super Bantamweight got this type of promotion and attention.

Both men came out tentative, and for the first six rounds, neither fighter was able to put together much offense. Frampton, the shorter of the two men, appeared to be a little bit busier, as Quigg appeared tentative and unable to do much but feint.

The seventh round saw the fighters appear to respond to the restless crowd, and both men landed good punches in the most heated exchanges of the fight. Quigg appeared to fight with a bit of added urgency in the second half of the fight, with most observers feeling he had given away the first half of the fight by being tentative.

Quigg’s added urgency in the later rounds saw him start to win a few rounds, but Frampton was able to hold him off by consistently landing single punches. The crowd responded and the fight picked up over the course of the last three rounds, but it would not be enough for Quigg. As the fight ended, Frampton did a little dance, and the two embraced afterwards, with Frampton pecking Quigg on the cheek. In the end, the judges had a split decision as Quigg did not due enough to close the gap. Judge Levi Martinez had it for Quigg 115-113, and judges David Parris and Carlos Sucre had 116-112 for Frampton.

The big fight did not live up to it’s expectations. Frampton moves on to a big fight with Guillermo Rigondeaux or Leo Santa Cruz, while Quigg will have to adjust to now being a former world champion. This is probably not how Frampton and Quigg wanted to be compared to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

The Super Bantamweights topped the card, as Gavin McDonnell went home with the vacant WBC Silver belt with a unanimous decision win over Jorge Sanchez of Panama in the evening’s co-main event. McDonnell had distinct height and reach advantages, and he scored a knockdown in round two.

Featherweights Isaac Lowe and Marco McCullough slugged it out over the Commonwealth title. Lowe, the stockier of the two, earned the stoppage at the one minute and fifty-six second mark of round 8, as he had McCullough bloodied.

The British Light Heavyweight title is going home with Hosea Burton, as he moved his record to 15-0 with a TKO over Miles Shinkwin. Burton looked comfortable from the start, and he sent Shinkwin to the canvas in the second and fifth rounds before ending it in the sixth. Shinkwin did make a fight of it, but the referee had to step in to prevent him from absorbing further damage. For Burton, who is reported to have a broken nose, it was just his sixth win by stoppage.

In Flyweight action, undefeated Charlie Edwards stayed that way, moving his record to a perfect 7-0 and capturing the vacant WBC International Silver title with a unanimous decision over Luke Wilton. Next up for Edwards is a match for the British Flyweight title.
