LA – Tijuana Blazing with Boxing on Friday Night
LA – Tijuana Blazing – Summer in two cities brings a lot of heat.
First a charity event in downtown L.A. brings L.A.P.D. facing N.Y.P.D. in a battle of the badges on Friday July 1, at the Belasco Theater. The police officers will be joined by three professional bouts and sponsored by Golden Boy Promotions.
Proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Second, Tijuana hosts young budding star Kenia Enriquez’s return to the boxing ring on Friday at the Grand Hotel when she faces Brenda Ramos in a light flyweight clash. It’s her first fight since her triumphant appearance on the Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin fight card in L.A.
Let’s talk about what’s going on in Los Angeles first.
Oscar De La Hoya shares a special interest with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“As many of you know, this is an issue that is very near and dear to my heart after losing my own mother to breast cancer in 1990. I’m so proud of everyone involved for their support of this event that will help bring awareness and raise money for such an important cause,” said De La Hoya.
Back in 1990, the East L.A. was a youngster preparing to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic boxing team that would go to Barcelona, Spain in 1992. He accomplished his quest of capturing the gold medal and then embarked on one of the most successful pro boxing careers ever seen.
Now he heads Golden Boy Promotions and will match all money made on the “Friday Night Fights” fight card for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The event includes NYPD officers battling with LAPD officers in the boxing ring including a female bout said L.A.s police chief.
“It is a privilege to be here with you all, representing the two biggest cities in the nation, and the people they are policed by,” said LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck. “I see how hard they work and they are great representatives of the City of Los Angeles, the LAPD, as well as NYPD, and I am proud to have them fight on behalf of a great organization, and for a great cause.”
Three pro bouts will also take place with Colombia’s Oscar Negrete (14-0, 5 KOs) facing Jose Bustos (11-6-3) in a bantamweight bout; Emilio Sanchez (12-0, 9 KOs) meets Hugo Partida (20-7-2, 15 KOs) in a super bantamweight match; and Niko Valdes (1-0) clashing with Michael Andrews (0-1) in a super middleweight contest.
The doors open at 5p.m. and the first bout begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $20. For more information call (213) 746-1606.
“La Gema”
In Tijuana, Kenia “La Gema” Enriquez (16-1, 8 KOs) faces Brenda Ramos (8-2, 4 KOs) of Monterrey, Mexico in an eight round light flyweight bout at the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico. It’s been two months since the former world champion last performed.
“My last fight was the biggest fight of my career against a fighter (Quintana) that nobody had been able to knock out,” said Enriquez who fought on the Gennady Golovkin and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez fight card on April 23. “It was on the same card as the two best (male) fighters pound for pound so it was very important.
Now Enriquez faces Ramos, a knockout puncher who faced the younger Enriquez sister Tania last November and was defeated by knockout after a fierce struggle.
“The fighter I face on Friday is brave and good. She’s faced national champions and that gives you experience,” said Enriquez, 22, who was also an amateur star. “I don’t think it will be an easy fight but I like challenges. I want to fight the best including the champion. I want a world title again.”
La Gema is back.
