Results from the Cosmo: Smith Upends Galarza in the Main Go of a 10-Bout Card

Results from the Cosmo – With his longtime friend Floyd Mayweather Jr. looking on and shouting encouragement from ringside, Las Vegas junior middleweight Ishe Smith copped a 10-round majority decision over Brooklyn’s Frank Galarza in the featured bout of 10-bout card on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas. A 38-year-old father of six, Smith, a former IBF 154-pound world champion, upped his record to 29-8 (12). Galarza, who was making his first start since suffering his first defeat at the hands of fast-rising Jarrett Hurd, slumped to 17-2-2.
Smith caught Galarza off-balance and dropped him with a right hook in the second round. That proved to be the margin of difference. If not for that moment, the bout would have been scored a draw. It was a bitter pill for Galarza who did his best work in the later rounds.
Although Mayweather, who promoted the show in consort with Al Haymon, was pleased by the outcome, the proceedings did not go as well as he had hoped. Two members of his Money Team stable, super bantamweight Alexis “Beaver” Santiago and super middleweight Lanell Bellows, came up short on the undercard. Santiago (21-4-1) lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Tijuana’s Jose Cayetano (20-4). Bellows (16-2-1) was on the wrong side of a split decision in an 8-round contest with Atlantic City’s DeCarlo Perez (16-5-1). Both Santiago and Bellows had 10-fight winning streaks interrupted.
In what figured to be the most competitive fight of the night, Justin DeLoach scored a 10-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Domonique Dolton (now 17-1-1) in a 10-round junior middleweight clash. The 22-year-old DeLoach, from Augusta, Georgia, improved to 16-1. He is trained by Paul Williams, the former two-time welterweight titlist who was paralyzed from the waist down in a 2012 motorcycle accident.
In other bouts of note, super middleweight J’Leon Love (23-1, 13 KOs) scored a smashing knockout over journeyman Dashon Johnson and super lightweight Sharif Bogere (29-1, 20 KOs) won by TKO 5 over Columbian invader Luis Eduardo Florez. Bogere is now trained by veteran Thell Torrence after breaking ranks with longtime trainer Kenny Adams.
