Womens Boxing News – Laila Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali, was among five athletes honored on Monday evening, Nov. 29, at the annual bash of Boston’s Sports Museum. The event, dubbed The Tradition, was held at TD Garden, the home of the NBA’s Boston Celtics and NHL’s Boston Bruins.
Laila Ali, now 38 years old, competed from 1999 to 2007, finishing her professional boxing career with a record of 24-0 with 21 KOs. A two-division world champion, Laila and her contemporary, Lucia Rijker, are widely regarded as the top pound-for-pound female boxers of their generation, if not the best female boxers of all time.
In retirement, Laila has appeared on numerous TV shows, including a third-place finish on “Dancing with the Stars,” and has taken her place among the nation’s most prominent health and fitness experts.
Jeff Freeman, our own TSS New England correspondent, was among the media that attended the TD Garden gala. His report, which re-visits Laila’s boxing career, appears on our sister site, ThePrizefighters.com.
In her one-on-one conversation with Jeff Freeman, Laila Ali talked about her post-boxing life and had some interesting observations about amateur stars Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor, both of whom launched their pro careers in recent weeks amidst great fanfare.
