Casey Ramos Victorious in Main Go of Top Rank Card in Burbank

BURBANK, CA — Texas super featherweight Casey Ramos had a dark future staring into his face as Mexico’s Miguel Beltran belted him around, but a deep breath and another gear led him to victory on Friday.

Ramos (24-1, 6 KOs) defeated Los Mochis veteran Beltran (31-6, 21 KOs) after a 10-round seesaw battle in front of about 800 fans at the Marriott Convention Center. The Top Rank card was also televised.

In his last fight this past November, Ramos suffered his only loss as a pro against Andy Vences by technical decision. The fight was ended early because of a bad cut caused by a clash of heads. Once again Ramos endured a cut but this time from a solid punch.

Beltran, a veteran of two world title challenges, connected and wobbled Ramos early in the fight. Though Ramos was the busier puncher throughout, Beltran continuously landed the bigger blows. If not for Ramos solid chin the fight might have ended early.

Back and forth the two exchanged furious blows especially in the fifth, eighth and ninth rounds. But nobody took a back step and nobody flinched during the brutal exchanges. But in the last two rounds Ramos seemed to slip into another gear and fire even more rapid combinations. Beltran tried to match the Texan but was unable to keep pace.

Two judges scored it 96-94 for Ramos and another 97-93 for Ramos.

In another super featherweight bout, Detroit’s Erick De Leon (16-0, 10 KOs) won by technical knockout of Daulis Prescott (31-5) at 59 seconds of the third round. Prescott severely injured his arm during an exchange with De Leon. Earlier, the left-hander De Leon had floored Prescott with two back-to-back right hooks in the second round.

A battle of super welterweights saw the return of San Bernardino’s Artemio Reyes (24-2, 19 KOs) after a two year absence. He met New Mexico’s Hector Munoz (25-19-1) in a six round contest and looked very rusty in the first frame. But each round the former super lightweight contender seemed to strip of more rust. By the sixth and final round, Reyes was getting a little winded but showed better timing and spacing. All three judges scored it for Reyes 59-55 twice and 60-54. The lanky Reyes now trains in Riverside with Henry Ramirez and is now managed by Frank Espinoza.

Other bouts

South El Monte’s Arnold Barboza Jr. (16-0, 6 KOs) belted out Minnesota’s Markus Morris 10-3, 6 KOs) at 46 seconds of the fifth round in their super lightweight clash. A body shot by Barboza ended the night for Morris.

Rialto’s Robert Ochoa (2-0) had too much speed for Huntington Beach’s Guadalupe Arroyo (2-4) but it was not a runaway. Two judges scored it 40-36 and another 39-37 for Ochoa.

Inglewood’s Jessy Martinez (6-0, 4 KOs) connected with a counter right cross that wobbled Virginia’s Somner Martin (6-5) and then unleashed four more rapid blows to force referee Jack Reiss to end the fight at 2:20 of the first round of the welterweight fight.

Oxnard’s Ashkat Ualikhanov (2-1, 2 Kos) steamrolled Houston’s Eric Fowler (0-2), winning by knokckout at 1:49 of the second round. Uahlikhanov was too fast and too overwhelming for Fowler.

Indio’s Dominic Serna (1-0) gained a win in his pro debut by knockout over Alexander Acuna (1-1) of Mexico. Serna attacked the body viciously and then switched to southpaw and floored Acuna twice in the third round. The fight was stopped at 1:54 of the third round in the super featherweight fight by referee Zack Young. Serna had former super lightweight and welterweight world champion Tim “Desert Storm” Bradley in his corner.
