Matthysse vs Kiram Quick Results From Cali – HBO Boxing kicked off their 2018 calendar on Saturday, January 27th from the Forum in Inglewood, California. The HBO broadcast featured WBA world title fights in the lightweight and welterweight divisions holding down the main event spots.
WBA 135-pound titleholder Jorge Linares faced the challenge of once-beaten Mercito Gesta in the first title fight. Gesta was making his second bid for a world title and he came in very well prepared and very confident. Gesta kept it close in the first few rounds, but by round five it was apparent his efforts would not be enough as he was up against a wall in Linares who counter-attacked with precision behind a tight defense. Linares unloaded multi-punch combos at will. At the end of the twelve rounds the judges returned scores of 118-110,118-110,117-111. Linares successfully defends his WBA world lightweight title.
Argentinian veteran Lucas Martin Matthysse met Thailand’s undefeated Tewa Kiram with the vacant WBA world welterweight title on the line. Kiram was an x-factor and in the early going it was apparent that he had done his homework and come in with a gameplan. Matthysse seemed affected by Kiram’s reach and movement. Kiram was growing in confidence and by round five Matthysse was cut. In round eight Matthysse would turn the fight around with one punch, flooring Kiram. Kiram rose and kept on fighting but he got caught again and the referee waived the fight off with Kiram on his back. Matthysse achieves the world title that has eluded him, grabbing the WBA belt at 147 pounds.
