Daniel Dubois Mows Down Another Sacrificial Lamb

Daniel Dubois, who would be favored to beat any heavyweight out there with a comparable amount of experience, was fed a very soft touch today at the BT Sport Studio in London and responded as expected, blasting out sorely overmatched Ricardo Snijders who was rescued by the referee at the 0.20 second mark of round two. Snijders, who was rucked out of obscurity in the Netherlands, brought an 18-1 mark into the contest, but had no business in the same ring with Dubois who advanced his ledger to 15-0 with his 14^th knockout.

The six-foot-five Dubois, who had a 30-pound weight advantage, scored three knockdowns in the opening round, the first coming with a left hook to the body. A right hook early in the second round produced a fourth knockdown and the massacre was rightfully halted. Snijders took the fight on 10 days notice after Germany’s little-known Erik Pfeifer was scratched because he failed to submit his MRI in time.

“I was just getting warmed up,” said Dubois who has answered the bell for only 43 rounds. “I was excited to be there again and, hopefully, next time I will have a proper fighter in there with me.” That proper fighter will presumably be Joe Joyce. Their twice-postponed showdown is tentatively slated for Oct. 24 at London’s O2 Arena. Although neither owns a world title, the fight, if it comes off as scheduled, will be a blockbuster.

Other Bouts

In a 12-round contest in the 115-pound weight class, Sonny Edwards outclassed Thomas Essomba, winning a unanimous decision. The scores were 117-111, 117-112, and 116-112. Edwards (15-0, 4 KOs) was too slick for the 32-year-old Essomba (10-6) who represented his native Cameroon in the 2008 Olympics and was meeting an undefeated opponent for the fifth straight time.. Edwards apparently sprained his ankle in the 10^th frame, but was able to coast home.

Sonny Edwards, a 24-year-old Londoner, is the younger brother of former WBC flyweight title-holder Charlie Edwards who recently signed with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and will fight on the undercard of Josh Taylor’s fight in Glasgow on Sept. 26.

In an entertaining 10-round contest in the junior welterweight class, Liverpool’s Sam Maxwell (14-0, 11 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact with a 10-round unanimous decision over Joe Hughes (17-6-1). The scores were 98-92, which seemed a bit wide, and 77-74 twice.

Hughes, who had gone six rounds on 12 occasions, was a step up in class for Maxwell whose signature win will likely always remain his amazing TKO of France’s Sabri Sedari in March of last year. The final sequence of that fight went viral, attracting more than 2 million views in the first 24 hours. (In case, you missed it, Sedari was comfortably ahead with 30 seconds to go in the fight when he elected to showboat, dancing around with his hands at his side, mocking the admonition to “protect yourself at all times.” Sam Maxwell capitalized on his impertinence.)
