Results-from-LA-Where-Sebastian-Fundora-Turned-Away-Carlos-Ocampo

CARSON, Ca.- A Los Angeles crowd saw Sebastian “Towering Inferno” Fundora pound his way inside and outside to victory over gritty Mexican super welterweight Carlos Ocampo on Saturday. Sebastian’s little sister won too.

“Still had to go in there and bang. That’s what the fans came here for,” Sebastian said.

The extremely tall Fundora (20-0-1, 13 KOs) defended the WBC interim super welterweight title with little trouble against Mexico’s Ocampo (34-2, 22 KOs) at Dignity Health Sports Park. The fans, however, wanted the little guy to win.

In the beginning Ocampo had his moments until Fundora began to open up. And once he got moving, he was relentless.

Fundora used his eight-inch height advantage to keep Ocampo outside his reach; jabs and quick bursts were the preference. Ocampo connected loudly with blows to the body. For the first three rounds it looked sunny for the Mexican super welterweight.

In the fourth round Fundora took over by taking the fight inside. It was up close that he simply out-worked Ocampo with snapping left uppercuts and quick right hooks to the head. It was a combination that never failed.

Ocampo was willing to trade from the outside or inside. Fundora was always more accurate with his blows. He never telegraphed the combinations and connected over and over on the gritty Mexican fighter.

It was like watching old reruns round after round.

Ocampo was nearly dropped in the sixth round. After that, the power in his punches seemed to wane. Fundora was like a well-oiled machine. The punches kept coming and never stopped.

After 12 rounds all three judges saw Fundora the winner 117-111, 118-110, 119-109. He keeps his place in line at the top of the WBC super welterweight rankings.

“He was tough, very tough, his face was swollen up too, but he was a tough Mexican fighter,” said Fundora. “I saw in the middle of the rounds I might as well go to the body and take those.”

The win keeps him in line for the WBC middleweight title.

“I’m the WBC mandatory I think I earned my spot. I’m next. Fingers crossed,” Fundora said.

Also on the card, Gabriela Fundora (9-0, 4 KOs) defeated Naomi Reyes (9-2) by decision after 10 rounds in a flyweight match.

IBF Super Fly Title

Argentina’s Fernando Martinez (15-0, 8 KOs) walked into the ring with a fiery blue hair color that made him appear to be a blue demon, then he fought like one in retaining the IBF super flyweight title by defeating former champion Jerwin Ancajas (33-3-2, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision.

Some doubted that Martinez could win the rematch against Filipino southpaw Ancajas, but once again he proved his unorthodox style that somewhat resembles his promoter Marcos Maidana’s was too much to handle, even for a strong fighter like Ancajas. Despite often being squared up in his stance. Martinez ferociously overpowered the former champion most rounds.

Ancajas tried fighting from the outside and then holding Martinez after every charge, it just couldn’t drench the fiery attacks that saw the Argentine fighter always seem to land the last punch. And every time Ancajas connected solidly, Martinez ran after him with punches firing until he connected too.

After 12 rounds with neither fighter going down, all three judges scored in favor of Martinez 119-109, 118-110 twice. Martinez keeps the title.

“This was a validation of the first fight,” said Martinez still energized. “The truth is that it is definitely hard to maintain that hunger and keep the title.”

Middleweights

It took a couple of rounds to fire up the furnace and then Dominican middleweight Carlos Adames (22-1, 17 KO) and Mexico’s Juan Macias Montiel (23-6-2, 23 Kos) lit up the arena with savage blows that resulted in a knockout win for Adames. He wins the interim WBC middleweight title.

“It was a great fight, I’m very happy to be on television,” Adames said.

After a first round in which neither fighter connected the second was slightly better. Then the dynamite was unleashed and both connected with big blows that excited the crowd. For two more minutes both looked for the punch to end the fight. Adames connected with a right to the head and followed up with several more big blows until referee Ray Corona jumped in to halt the fight at 2:37 of the third round.

Wise move said Adames.

“It was perfect. I hit hard and the referee did his job. He’s a young fighter and may have a big career,” Adames said of the stoppage though Montiel never hit the canvas. “I knew that once I hit him with the right hand the fight was over.”

It opens the door for a title shot for the WBC middleweight title.

“I hope they have the courage to face me now,” said Adames of the champions.

Mean Machine

Egidijus Kavaliauskas (23-2-1, 18 KOs) successfully tracked the elusive and tall Mykal Fox (22-4, 5 KOs) to win by unanimous decision after 10 rounds in a welterweight showdown. Despite a large height disadvantage the “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas was able to time Fox with jolting left jabs and right cross leads and floor him twice. Fox had his moments but seemed unwilling to risk the incoming power shots from the Lithuanian fighter. All three judges saw Kavliauskas the winner convincingly: 99-90; 98-90; 100-88.

Could Fundora be next?
