International Brotherhood of Prizefighters Rankings: Week of October 29, 2023

Tyson Fury looked terrible. Horrible. Hey, if you’re a fight fan, it’s difficult not to like the big charismatic fellow. Those who weren’t already on board, had to be won over when on December 1, 2018, Fury climbed off the canvas to finish a fight that he was winning, but in the end was only granted a draw for his efforts. That fight is why we watch dozens of lethargic outings, for the opportunity to see a glimpse of the human spirit on full display and make us a fan for life. Also, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the sterling job of one of boxing’s best referees (thank you, Jack Reiss, for executing your role perfectly).

Do we believe Tyson Fury took Francis Ngannou lightly? Tyson Fury is a highly intelligent guy. Wouldn’t say much for his intelligence if he took Ngannou lightly.

It doesn’t take a real stretch of the imagination to realize that while Fury did win the fight, he may not have fared so well against what constitutes an elite fighter in the heavyweight division. If Fury showed up looking like that against Usyk, Joshua, or Zhang, the result most likely would not have gone his way. And we’re not talking about his physical appearance here, we’re talking about how Fury executed his game plan. He looked surprisingly ordinary for large portions of the fight. And with that, he drops to the fourth best heavyweight in the division and falls out of the top 10 pound for pound.

Francis Ngannou. If you are to believe the hype around his punching power, his punches are equivalent to 96 horsepower. He has the hardest punch, measured at 129,161 units. That’s equal to getting hit by a Ford Escort going as fast as it can. While this was Francis’ first professional boxing match, he is no stranger to combat sports or to fighting in the 25-30 minute range. Ngannou came prepared and won almost half the rounds. While he should be most proud of his outing, it’s not enough to garner a top ten slot against more seasoned fighters. But we do look forward to the day that we see Ngannou’s name amongst them, because he will be a more than welcome addition to the mix.

Devin Haney is back in the pound for pound top 10. Everyone who was below Fury moves up a tick, with Haney taking the tenth spot.
