Robert “Ghost” Guerrero Update, Melinda Cooper and More…Avila

Robert “The Ghost’ Guerrero will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a partial tear of his left rotator cuff, said Mario Serrano his publicist. Guerrero was forced to withdraw from his fight against Marcos Maidana that would have taken place on Saturday Aug. 27, in San Jose. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Michael Dillingham at his Redwood City facilities at Sports Orthopedic and Rehabilitation (SOAR). According to Dillingham he expects a full recovery for Guerrero in six to eight months. Team Guerrero was relieved to hear the news.

Boxer Melinda Cooper will appear on the television drama Necessary Roughness this Wed. Aug. 24 on USA Network. Cooper, one of female boxing’s best prizefighters, did the fighting scenes for actress Alyssa Diaz. The taping of the TV drama took place in Atlanta. Cooper, 26, fights out of Las Vegas and is advised by Redland’s Claudia Ollis. Cooper is expected to fight soon in Southern California.

Riverside’s Hector Serrano (13-2, 5 KOs) fights Juanito Garcia (14-3, 5 KOs) at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday night. The two lightweights are the main event and both seek a win to move forward in the division. “I took two years off,” said Garcia, 25, who trained in Big Bear for this fight. Serrano, 26, trained in Perris and last fought in February. Golden Boy is promoting the fight card.

East L.A.’s Frankie “The Pitbull” Gomez (10-0, 8 KOs) will face Adrian Granados (8-1-1, 5 KOs) in the main event on Friday Aug. 26 in Chicago. Gomez was one of Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero’s primary sparring partners in Big Bear.

UFC 134 features middleweight world champion Anderson Silva (28-4) defending against Yushin Okami (27-5) on Saturday Aug. 27 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Also on the first ever UFC fight card in South America will be Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (19-5) fighting Forrest Griffin (18-6) and Minotauro Nogueira (32-6-1) is facing Brendan Schaub (9-1) plus many others. The main card will be on pay-per-view but other portions of the fight card can be seen on Spike TV and Facebook.com.

Efrain Esquivias defeated Juan Ruiz by unanimous decision to win the vacant NABF featherweight title on Friday in Corona, Calif. Also, Artemio Reyes Jr. captured the WBC Latino welterweight title by second round knockout over Mexico’s Miguel Munguia. Other winners were Riverside’s Richard Contreras, Daniel Franco and Roberto Crespo. Allentown’s Miguel Diaz and Angel Aponte were also winners.

Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (20-1, 17 KOs) knocked out Joseph Gomez (17-5-1, 8 KOs) at 1:24 of round one in Mexicali, Mexico on Saturday Aug. 20. It was Angulo’s first fight in over a year. The Mexicali native was recently signed by Golden Boy Promotions and is considered one of the top junior middleweights in the world.

Pomona’s Alex Flores (5-0, 3 KOs) won by technical knockout in round four over Sergey Karpenko (6-2, 4 KOs) on Thursday in Costa Mesa. In a middleweight battle David Tabatadze (8-1-1) out-pointed San Diego’s Lester Gonzalez (12-5-2) in a tight six round battle.

Southern California brothers Librado Andrade (29-4, 22 KOs) and Enrique Ornelas (31-7, 20 KOs) return to their birthplace Guanajuato, Mexico to fight on Saturday Aug. 27. Andrade faces Matt O’Brien (18-2, 7 KOs) and Ornelas opposes Alfredo Contreras (11-11-2).

Riverside’s Omar Chavez (26-0-1, 19 KOs), the son of Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez, will fight Jorge Paez Jr. (28-4-1, 17 KOs) the son of Jorge “Maromero” Paez on Saturday Sept. 3 in Chiapas, Mexico. The fight is scheduled to be televised. Chavez is the younger brother of middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

A quartet of heavyweight contenders meet in Germany on Saturday as Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KOs) meets former world champion Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs) for the vacant WBA title and Robert Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs) fights former world champion Sergie Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs).

WBC flyweight world titleholder Mariana “Mexican Barbie” Juarez (29-5-3, 14 KOs) defends against Japan’s Asami Shikasho (5-2, 3 KOs) on Saturday in Tlaxcala, Mexico. This is Juarez’s second world title defense.

Two world title fights take place in Guadalajara, Mexico when IBF junior flyweight world titleholder Ulises Solis (33-2-3) defends against Jether Oliva (17-0-1, 11 KOs). Also, WBO mini-flyweight Raul Garcia (30-1-1, 18 KOs) defends against Moises Fuentes (13-0-1).

Former bantamweight world champion Fernando Montiel (46-3-2, 36 KOs) returned to the ring and knocked out Alvaro Perez (21-4-1, 12 KOs) at 1:26 of round three in Ensenada, Mexico. It was Montiel’s first fight since losing the title by knockout against Nonito Donaire.

Matthew Hatton won by unanimous decision over Andrei Abramenka (15-0-2) in a welterweight match to win the vacant IBF International title on Friday in Lancashire, United Kingdom. Hatton is the younger brother of Ricky Hatton.

Former U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade (14-0) defeated middleweight contender Grady Brewer (28-13, 16 KOs) by unanimous decision on Friday in Indiana. Brewer had upset several undefeated prospects in the past and is considered a very dangerous opponent for any middleweight. It was Andrade’s best victory of his young career.
