L.A. Matadors Host Thailand Team; Other Results – Welcome Bangkok to L.A.
The Los Angeles Matadors introduce the Bangkok Elephants to the media capital of the world on Sunday Dec. 18, at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood. World Series of Boxing returns with East Meets West.
Led by Rau’ Shee Warren, the Matadors (2-2) meet the Elephants (0-4) whose record of no wins came because of four forfeits as floods postponed all of their previous scheduled matches.
Other members of the Matador team include Raynell Williams, Sean Turner, Javier Torres, Eric Fowler, Vyacheslav Shabransky, Edwin Sandoval, Jason Quigley, Sijoula Shabazz, Fernando Martinez, Russell Lamour, Zaal Katchatadze, Leonid Malkov, Siarhei Karneyeu, David Imoesiri and Levan Guledani.
Last year the Matadors were one of the top teams in WSB which included multiple teams in the U.S. This year the Matadors are the sole U.S. team with the remainder of the 11 teams coming from around the world. It’s truly an international tournament with Mexico City, Paris, Moscow, Bangkok, Milan, Beijing, Istanbul, Mumbai, Leipzig, Baku, and Astana sponsoring teams in their municipalities.
Hosting the Sunday evening fight card will be former heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield on Fox Sports that begins at 7 p.m.

MMA champion Gilbert Melendez (19-2) defends the Strikeforce lightweight title against Jorge Masvidal (22-6) on Saturday Dec. 17. Masvidal beat KJ Noons in his last bout and Melendez is considered one of the top MMA fighters in the world. The title fight takes place at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. Showtime televises.
Brazil’s Rosilette Dos Santos (25-5, 14 KOs) retained the WIBA super flyweight title by unanimous decision against Paulina Cardona (19-10-4) after 10 rounds on Saturday. The title match was held in Parana, Brazil.
Mexico’s popular Mariana “Barbie” Juarez (32-5-3, 15 KOs) successfully defended the WBC flyweight world title a fourth time within a year. Fellow Mexican Diana Gonzalez (5-4) lost by decision after 10 rounds in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday. Juarez won the title in March against Italy’s Simona Galassi.
Ashley Theophane (31-4-1, 9 KOs) stopped Ben Murphy (8-5-1) at 2:33 of round 11 to retain the British welterweight title on Saturday. The title match took place in Peterlee, United Kingdom.
WBC lightweight titleholder Erica Farias (11-0, 6 KOs) defends against Florida’s formidable Melissa Hernandez (16-2-3, 6 KOs) on Friday in Mendoza, Argentina. Farias is making her first title defense. Hernandez is a former junior lightweight and lightweight world champion.
WBO featherweight titleholder Orlando Salido (36-11-2, 24 KOs) defends his title against Weng Haya (14-4, 8 KOs) on Saturday in Obregon, Mexico. Salido captured the title by knockout against Puerto Rico’s Juan Manuel Lopez.
Fight results from L.A.
Armen Ovsepyan (12-2) claimed the California State Super Welterweight Title by halting Mexico’s Jorge Pimentel at 59 seconds in the second round in Vernon, California on Friday.
Armenia’s super featherweight Vage Suruhan moved his record to 3-0 by out hustling Juan Ramon Reyes. Suruhan walked away with a 39-37 (twice) and 40-36 unanimous decision.
East L.A.’s Featherweight Alan Martinez (10-1-1, 6 KOs) halted a very wild Ronald Rodriguez at 2:43 of round three.
Junior middleweight Alonso Loeza scored the mild upset by stopping pro debuting Octavio Franco at 1:15 in the third round.
