Light heavyweight champ and Philadelphia-born ring legend Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) puts his title on the line against former light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson from New Haven, Conn. (30-1, 17 KOs). In their first meeting last October, the highly anticipated match-up ended in a controversial no-contest after just one and a half rounds when Hopkins suffered a shoulder injury due to an accidental foul.
The 47-year-old Hopkins, who once ruled the middleweight division with 20 successful title defenses, became the oldest man in boxing history to hold a world title when he defeated Jean Pascal last year at age 46. Dawson, 29, is widely recognized as one of the most talented fighters in the world and will rely on his skills, youth and determination to renew his reign over the light heavyweight division.
The action begins with a scheduled 12-round heavyweight contest, as undefeated Seth Mitchell (24-0-1, 18 KOs) from Brandywine, Md. goes up against Chazz Witherspoon (30-2, 22 KOs) of Paulsboro, NJ. Mitchell, a former Michigan State linebacker, has been on the fast track, utilizing speed, power and conditioning. He turned pro after just ten amateur bouts and is lighting up the division. Witherspoon, a former Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champ with a solid amateur background, brings speed, power and ring savvy to the contest.
The night of boxing programming kicks off at 9:45 p.m. with the debut of the third episode of the all-access series “24/7: Mayweather/Cotto,” chronicling the two fighters as they prepare for their May 5 pay-per-view showdown in Las Vegas.
All HBO boxing events are presented in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.
