Guerrero Says He Will “Humble” Floyd Mayweather
ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO, SHOWTIME'S STEPHEN ESPINOZA & DAVID ITSKOWITCH OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS: MEDIA BRUNCH QUOTES FROM NEW YORK CITY
Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion Guerrero Will Face
WBC Welterweight World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather
Saturday, May 4, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas Live on SHOWTIME PPV®
NEW YORK (March 26, 2013) – It's been a couple of hectic but satisfying and productive days for Robert Guerrero, who along with his wife, Casey, appeared on “The 700 Club” with Pat Robertson and Terry Meeuwsen on Monday in Virginia Beach, Va., met Robin Roberts on the set of “Good Morning America” in New York City on Tuesday and then later in the morning were joined by Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®, Stephen Espinoza for an “invite-only” media brunch at Vanderbilt Suites in The MetLife Building in Midtown Manhattan.
During Tuesday's brunch, which was emceed by Golden Boy Promotions Chief Operating Officer, David Itskowitch, Guerrero (above in picture by Tom Casino of SHOWTIME), who turns 30 on Wednesday, was presented with a birthday cake.
Guerrero, a Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion, will challenge undefeated Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd Mayweather for the WBC Welterweight World Championship on Saturday, May 4, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The event, which will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV®, starts at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
Below is what Guerrero, Espinoza and Itskowitch said Tuesday.
ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO
“I want to thank everyone involved, Golden Boy and SHOWTME especially. I'm excited for this fight. Man, I just can't wait to get out there and fight Floyd Mayweather. I plan to shock the world.
“It's funny because I've been talking to the media and telling them that I'm going to beat Floyd. Now, it's time to get out there and do it. I'm ready. A lot of people think I'm crazy, but I think you're crazy for thinking that I'm crazy. Just look at my wife. She asked the Lord to heal her and He did.
“When you believe, amazing things happen. I'm telling you all now that I am going to beat him. I believe God does things for a reason. I believe he put me here to humble Floyd Mayweather, and it is going to happen.''
STEPHEN ESPINOZA
“We wanted to put this breakfast together partially to promote the fight, but anybody who knows anything about boxing knows that this is going to be a tough, tough fight. Anybody who says Mayweather is too fast, too strong and too good for Robert, well, they were saying that before Robert's fight with (Andre) Berto too.
“We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert. Knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual. It will be an incredible event on May 4. Dave (Itskowitch) said this will be the toughest fight of Robert's career. I think at the end of it, this will also be the toughest fight of Mayweather's career.''
DAVID ITSKOWITCH
“Robert Guerrero is an amazing fighter in the ring, but he is probably a more amazing person out of the ring. I know his story has been told a lot, but I don't think it has been told enough.
“The first fight we worked with him was in 2007. We got a call the day before the fight's final press conference with the horrifying news about Casey. I couldn't believe when he walked into the room that he was going to fight a few days later. The fight happened. He blitzed Martin Honorio in less than a minute. I guess he wanted to get back home to Casey.
“When Casey's condition got worse, he had a decision to make. He had to give up his title to take care of her. A lot of people questioned his decision, but it was the right thing to do. He's now sitting in front of us facing the biggest fight of his career.''
