Robert Guerrero Arrested At NY Airport For Having A Gun
Robert Guerrero, slated to fight Floyd Mayweather on May 4, was arrested for gun possession at JFK Airport Thursday morning, the NY Daily News reported.
The 31-1-1 boxer was in NY doing media to hype the forthcoming welterweight bout in Las Vegas, which will be shown on Showtime pay-per-view.
Guerrero (seen in above Tom Casino-Showtime photo at Tuesday media luncheon in NYC), who turned 30 on Wednesday, was catching a flight to Las Vegas, the News reported, where he will finish training for the Mayweather bout. I have heard that he likes to shoot guns at shooting ranges. I have not heard whether he has been known to carry a gun for protection, or where he is or is not licensed to carry a firearm.
I reached out to Geurrero’s manager, Bob Santos, to learn more, and left a message on his voice mail.
NY attorney Keith Sullivan told me that NY State has the stiffest gun laws in the nation and New York City has “very strict licensing requirements such that very few citizens are permitted to possess or carry guns.” He said if the Guerrero gun were loaded or had ammo within reach, he’d likely have to serve time. There is a 3 1/2 year minimum sentence in NY for such an infraction. In a few instances, that minimum was averted, with a plea deal, but Sullivan said that would likely be a deal offered to someone within law enforcement.
I hear on the grapevine that execs aren’t concerned that the big fight could be cancelled; Sullivan said the boxer would likely be arraigned today or tomorrow and his next step, a hearing, would probably occur after May 4.
I suspect the news brought some raised eyebrows or smiles in the Mayweather camp, as Guerrero has been taking shots at Mayweather for being a poor role model, and for worshipping money over all else.
