Canelo vs. Trout: The Moment of Truth

It’s the moment of truth for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Can Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 Kos) defeat a bona fide contender or a world titleholder like Austin “No Doubt” Trout (26-0, 14 Kos) on Saturday April 20, in San Antonio, Texas? The Alamodome awaits the outcome of the Showtime televised event.

Ever since Alvarez began fighting on large fight cards the public outpour has been virtually split down the middle on the redhead. Can he fight or not?

“He’s a chingon,” said Josesito Lopez who faced Alvarez the last time Canelo stepped in the ring. Basically Lopez said he’s a badass.

Others on the street claim the veneer of deception will be stripped by Trout.

One thing is certain: more than 30,000 have purchased tickets to see the Golden Boy Promotions fight card. That’s an incredible amount to see any prizefight.

“Its crazy dog,” said Tattoo, a well-known radio personality who will be hosting at the Alamodome. The L.A.-based DJ who works for SBS Broadcasting’s 96.3 Radio Latino.

Alvarez has cared less for the negative comments concerning his opposition and to prove it he accepted to battle Trout rather than face a subpar opponent on Cinco de Mayo weekend. It even impressed Trout.

“Canelo put his foot down, like a champ, and said ‘no, I want Trout,” said Trout of Alvarez preferring a unification battle instead of cream puff.

Trout has been fighting for a number of years professionally including sparring some of the best in the world. He’s traded blows with hammerheads like Antonio Margarito and speedsters like Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora. No one has ever had an easy time with the New Mexico boxer.

No one can criticize Alvarez in this fight.

“There’s always going to be criticism, but criticism is also constructive and in this particular case, it’s always your next fight that they’re going to criticize,” said Alvarez, 22. “This particular fight is the toughest and will silence the critics after.”

Likewise for Trout, he is entering his second high quality fight. In his last effort he defeated Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto in that fighter’s home away from home. It was impressive. Now he faces a young unbeaten Mexican fighter who is quickly becoming the idol of millions.

“He’s strong. He has good reflexes. He’s explosive,” said Trout about Canelo. “We don’t think his style is necessarily going to give us problems, but the skills that he brings within that style are going to be a bit of a problem.”

Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions and someone who knows full well the ramifications of this fight, has emphasized the importance of this fight.

“You don’t see fights like the one you are going to see Saturday night,” said De La Hoya, who was famous for fighting huge mega fights during his career. “Fighters are usually afraid to take on the best in their division, but not these two.”

Tattoo spent several days with both fighters and expects a fight of historic proportions.

“I think this fight is going to be one of those legendary fights like Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler,” said Tattoo. “It has all the makings of a great fight.”

Should Alvarez win this fight it could mark the beginning of a new boxing superstar. If not, well there’s always another coming down the aisle.

“When you put two hungry fighters together, you get the best,” De La Hoya said.
