Oscar De La Hoya Admits Self Into Treatment
Former fighter and current promoter Oscar De La Hoya’s battle against personal demons continues, as the 40-year-old California resident announced that he has admitted himself into a treatment facility.
De La Hoya, who retired from the ring shortly after his December 2008 loss to Manny Pacquiao, went public with a substance abuse struggle back in May 2011.
Here is the statement from De La Hoya, who won titles at six different weights, which went out on Tuesday early afternoon.
Los Angeles (September 10) – Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is the ring and mine in treatment.
I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility.
I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and longterm recovery from my disease must come first.
Thank you for your understanding. I ask for your support and privacy during this difficult time for me and my family.
De La Hoya, who won gold for the US at the 1992 Olympics admitted in August 2011 that he had succumbed to the temptation to use cocaine in the past, and had thought of ending his own life. The statement didn’t specify for what reason he was again entering treatment.
