Jose Felix Jr. Leads Fight Card in Glendale, Calif.

Mexico’s Jose Felix Jr. seeks to rebound from a loss and undefeated Ivan Najera faces a very stiff test when he faces Stan Martyniouk in a lightweight bout on Saturday.

Felix Jr. (26-1-1) needs to reclaim that confidence he lost when he meets Alejandro Rodriguez (21-14-1) in a junior lightweight clash at Glendale Civic Auditorium on the Bash Boxing Promotions and Art of Boxing Promotions. UniMas will televise the fight.

Last April, an almost cocky Felix entered the boxing ring to face Costa Rica’s Bryan Vasquez for the WBA interim junior lightweight title. In the past, Felix blitzed through opponents with fists blazing. Against Vasquez, he hit and moved against the veteran who had fought for a world title.

Vasquez gave an education in defense and offensive counter-punching. He resembled a 21st century version of Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Duran with his ability to roll with the punches and set up counters simultaneously. Felix became frustrated early and fired numerous low blows, head butts and other illegalities that were too many to count.

The Costa Rican’s prior adventures in Mexico prepared him for anything Felix could deliver. Two years earlier Vasquez invaded a Tijuana boxing arena to face Mexican bully boy Jorge Lacierva who tried every dirty move he knew including hitting the Costa Rican on the knee caps. He collapsed from a body blow from the Costa Rican. When facing Felix all these similar improprieties did nothing to derail Vasquez’s one-track mind. Felix lost by unanimous decision.

Cockiness can be a good thing but against Vasquez he was quickly on the defensive. Felix needs to reclaim that confidence.

San Antonio’s Ivan Najera (13-0, 8 Kos) steps up to meet Stan Martyniouk (13-1, 2 Kos) in a crossroads fight with the winner moving up the ladder. Martyniouk fights out of Southern California.

Undefeated welterweights Egis Kavaliaskus (6-0) faces Benjamin Whitaker (7-0) in a six round bout. Kavaliaskus, 26, originally hails from Lithuania and now trains in Oxnard. Whitaker, 30, fights out of San Antonio.
