Roach on Pacquiao-Mayweather: “We’re No Closer At This Point”
So you know that promoter Bob Arum has been on an optimism upswing when talking about the prospects for the super-fight that is such a no brainer, and has been for almost five years, that it will stand as the biggest moron move in the history of all sports if it doesn’t get done, if we’re talking purely from a lost revenue POV, Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.
Arum says the CBS and by extension Showtime folks are open to a collaboration of services and revenue sharing plan with the folks at HBO, who have put on 18 Pacquiao PPV events. For that reason, the 82-year-old titan of pugilistic wheeling and dealing has said he thinks it could get done next year. That is, if Floyd wants it…Arum makes no secret of his belief that Floyd doesn’t want it, and the XL roadblock to making the event happen has the initials FJM.
I asked Pacman trainer Freddie Roach about the prospects. A few months ago, he told me he was on an optimism upswing regarding that fight being made. But that POV was in the context of Pacquiao taking leave from promoter Arum for The Fight, and Pacman compensating Arum for being shunted with an XXL check. That possibility, if it ever was, is off the table.
So, Freddie, is Bob promoting, or is there some smoke and will there be fire, and will we see Pacquiao-Mayweather? Dedham Freddie came at the question with a bucket of water: “Well, when Bob says Showtime and HBO are talking, that makes me feel good, but when I talk to a couple guys I know, and they say that’s not true, I get disappointed, you go through the same things, so, it’s no closer at this point.”
Sorry to be the guy with the wet blanket here; but, you’re used to that by now, right?
