The Golovkin Is Released; GGG Stops Rubio in Round Two

Published

Gennady Golovkin did what he does, manhandle and stop his foe on Saturday night in Carson, CA., at the Stub Hub Center, and on HBO. The scrap was billed as “Mexican Style” but the loser, Marco Antonio Rubio, came in overweight, and underwhelming, not nearly in a manner befitting true Mexican pugilistic legends, or frankly, even sub legendary hitters.

In round two, Golovkin dropped his Mexican opponent, and the loser couldn’t beat the count. A right uppercut buzzed him, and then after, a left hook did the overwhelming damage.

GGG was 159 (173) on Friday, while Rubio was 161 3/4 (181). He had to hand $100,000 to GGG, for being overweight. Trainer Robert Garcia said Rubio had lost 15 pounds a couple days before, and he couldn’t take off any more. Is it a trend, Max Kellerman asked? No, he said; it happens in boxing, and he can’t babysit the fighters. Jim Lampley said that it is the responsibility of both the trainer and the fighter to honor their contract. Before the scrap, we heard about Gennady’s fraternal twin bro, Max, who also fought, but didn’t have the same drive. He helps Abel Sanchez train Gennady, we were told.

In the first, GGG, with that wide stance, landed hooks. His stiff jab worked, but Rubio didn’t cave right away. He actually came forward, but not as much as the round progressed. Rubio answered after eating a sharp, to his credit. Sanchez said after that they had three or four rounds to practice. In the second, Rubio ate nasties. A right to the body smarted on Rubio. A right uppercut wobbled the Mexican. Down he went, at 1:50, from a well placed left hook. He didn’t get up in time…

The sequence to the close went like this: GGG used a left hook-right uppercut combo. When the uppercut stunned Rubio, he hopped on him. A left hook to the body helped the process, and Rubio backed away, his faculties compromised. GGG basted, missed a couple while Rubio slipped and ducked, desperately, but a left hook high on the head put Rubio on his back. Jack Reiss counted to ten and Rubio timed it so he got up a millisecond after the ten, so he could complain and look irked. He hugged GGG after, smiled, I guess happy he made the money and didn’t get battered for very long.

The end: 1:19, of the second, for the smiling assassin, a shark on two legs…
