Espinoza on Mayweather-Pacquiao Negotiations, Arum Reacts

If you are not on Twitter, and are a boxing fan, or are involved in the sport really in any manner beyond being a casual follower, then I recommend you get on Twitter.

Stuff happens on Twitter, feuds coalesce, deals get formed, tomfoolery and shenanigans ensue, hilarity and chagrin are on display…

Such as when five days ago, Showtime boxing boss Stephen Espinoza, one of the most candid LCs in the Twittersphere, among suits, Tweeted, in reference to Floyd Mayweather being the reason a Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight hasn’t been made:

“Stop. Offered him $40M plus big upside and he passed. He doesn’t want it.”

Espinoza followed up with this Tweet, in response to MY Tweet, which contained a nugget from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who spoke of Floyd being the impediment to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on a Tuesday confernce call to hype his Nov. 22 Pacquiao-Chris Algieri card in Macau:

“Apparently Bob doesn’t even know who the A-side is. “@Woodsy1069: Arum talks Pacquiao-Mayweather, says he wants it, manny wants.”

(NOTE TO THE UNINFORMED: The @, followed by a name, denotes the name, the identity, of the person or entity, Tweeting.)

I responded, in Libra fashion, seeking a mediation which all parties would find palatable, and would benefit the masses as well as the monied classes.

“@Woodsy1069: How bout we call both As, and get er made!??”

Espinoza countered:

@StephenEspinoza Bob hasn’t moved an inch in 3 months. He’s not negotiating. “@Woodsy1069: @StephenEspinoza how bout we call both As, and get er made!??”

OUCH. Solid flurry there. Now this sort of become a tag match..or would have, maybe, if the world was fair and right, and Arum ran his own Twitter account, and was active on it, because then maybe it would have gotten nuclear…and entertaining…and maybe even useful, in that it might’ve helped move this kerfuffle out of kerfuffle stage, to where inroads could be made in making the no-brainer SUPERFIGHT a reality.

But Arum isn’t a Twitter devotee, like some of us shameless addicts. So, I reached out to the most successful boxing promoter in the history of the sport to get his response to the Espinoza flurry. And here is the Arum response:

A Top Rank flack asked Arum for his thoughts on the matter and told me, “Bob said this is not true, that Espinoza is not involved in negotiating for this.”

So there we stand, friends. Stay tuned to TheSweetScience.com for continuing updates, and get on the Twitter to stay that much more informed, amused and occasionally appalled. It’s better than watching the Kardashians, that I can promise you…
