Adonis Obliterates Sukhotskiy, Proclaims Himself the Man at 175

WBC light heavy champ Adonis Stevenson took on Dmitriy Sukhotskiy of Russian in the main event on Showtime Friday night, from Montreal, and we wondered if maybe “Superman” would look past the challenger to bigger fights that didn’t happen.

Paul Malignaggi of Showtime said he thought maybe Adonis looked a bit blase this week. But that gut instinct went by the wayside once he got the challenger’s mannerisms down. A knockdown in the second, and three in the fifth spelled doom for an overmatched visitor.

Stevenson could have left an even better taste in the mouths of watchers if he hadn’t told Jim Gray after that a Sergey Kovalev and the like would have to come to him. Doesn’t he want Kovalev and the big bouts now, as he’s not getting older? He’ll let Al Haymon and promoter Yvon Michel sort that out, he said, and I could hear the grimaces in households everywhere.

In the first, Adonis (24-1 entering; from Haiti, living in Montreal) wore the Kronk gold. He was patient, as Suk advanced, but without being busy himself. In the second, the 22-1 Suk had not much more luck. Adonis pumped up the jab. Then we saw one twos. A left sent Suk down. He got up and replay showed us it was a punch-shove.

In the third, Adonis moved right, toward the right hand, the power hand. No matter; Adonis cracked and then slid out. The feet were a heavy edge for the Haitian. In the fourth, we saw lefts to the body from Adonis. Ouchie. Sharp leather.

In the fifth, a counter left sent Suk to the mat again. Down he went again, second time in the round, off residual weakness. And for a third time and that was all she wrote. The end came at 2:42 as Suk lay on his back under the bottom rope.

Adonis went 80-272 to 23-136 for the loser.
