MIAMI MEETUP: Mayweather Talks To Pacquiao
Theater of the unexpected, this sport, this shared addiction of ours. In that realm, would it not be amazing and amusing if Mother Nature was what gave a shove to getting The Fight, circa 2015 made?
Manny Pacquiao, I’m told, was supposed to be flying back to his homeland after an event filled trip to the US and UK, which included glitzy premieres of his “Manny” doc, as well as meetings with royalty, Prince Harry, and combover royalty, Donald Trump, who presides over the Miss Universe Pageant in which Pacman appeared as a judge on Sunday night.
The weather grounded flights, and made it so Pacman had to stick around the Miami area. The hoops junkie hit a Heat game, Heats vs. Bucks at American Airlines Arena, and guess who else was in the front row?
Yep, one Floyd Mayweather, his rival in theory, the man with whom he has done a dance of approach and avoidance, as all of us sit by and accept tidbits of info and continue to hope that the no brainer bout gets made…
The two hitters came together, during halftime, and shot the bull. Did they talk about the price of nachos at the barn…or get onto the same page, find some common ground, and after all the BS back and forth, nd trash talk and lawsuiting, and posturing on social media, realize that they should do what it takes to end the flirtation, and get to the summation: let’s get ready to rumble, I’m hoping they decided.
And if so, can we all get a round of applause for the snowpocalypse, and add this fact to the Wiki for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. “Bad weather played a heavy hand in getting the two boxers on the same page, and getting a fight which had been talked about since 2009 made.”
That would be just strange enough to make sense, another ludicrous and wondrous chapter in the book of chicanery and gallantry and athletic wizardry that is boxing.
PS This indeed was the first time the two men have chatted face to face, I am told by one who would know. They have talked on the phone at least once, but no, never crossed paths and decided to interact. Here’s hoping the cellie exchange will bear fruit, yes?
