Looking Like Kirkland Will Be Training With Wolfe
Here’s a stat that might sway you, even slightly, as you assess the May 2 fight between Canelo Alvarez, the Mexican hitter who turned pro at 15 and has campaigned his way to being one of the top three attractions in the sport today, and tough Texan James Kirkland, the free swinging homerun hitter who sometimes is his own worst enemy, outside the ring, but is a threat to check and wreck anyone’s chin at any given moment.
With Ann Wolfe in his corner, Kirkland (age 30; 32-1 with 28 KOs) is unbeaten as a pro. Yep, with the no-nonsense blasts of tough love coming from the no-BS-allowed Wolfe, Kirkland is the best version of boxer he can be. Sounds like a no brainer, get Wolfe on board and get in sync for a most stern but no undoable test, in Canelo (age 24; 44-1-1, with 31 KOs)…
Ah, but don’t you know boxing life is never simple like that. Kirkland has said he’s not sure who will be in his corner, and will train him for his third fight in 3.5 years.
I checked in with Kirkland’s manager, high powered attorney Mike Miller. The TX-based counselor told me it’s looking like, were he a betting man, that Kirkland and Wolfe will be together for this bout. Nothing certain, but that’s the way it’s looking. So, adjust the odds in your head. Kirkland with Wolfe is a different deal than Kirkland with anyone else. She knows how to press his buttons the right way, and get the most out of him. Oh and also, anyone worring about Kirkland’s weight; kid has a bunch of time to get to 155. He’s on it now, treating the fridge like a foe, I’m told, so his weight should be no issue.
HBO will show the fight, promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
