Tapia To Headline May 8, at Pru Center, in NJ, and on Tru TV
Boxing is back baby…back in Jersey in a big way, and coming to a new TV platform.
The Prudential Center, on May 8, Glen Tapia (23-1 with 15 KOs; age 25; Passaic NJ resident nicknamed “Jersey Boy”), a lunchpail type who has been blossoming under the tutelage of Freddie Roach, will headline, a source told me.
Another blue collar brawler, Seanie Monaghan, will also fight on the Top Rank card, portions of which will screen on Tru TV, a cable station heretofore more known for crime fare, and then comedy, rather that sweet science action.
Julian Rodriguez, an 8-0 prospect, took to Instagram to tout his place on the card.
The junior middleweight Tapia just fought, taking on Daniel Dawson in Macao, scoring a TK3 win on March 7. Monaghan is a fan fave in and around his home base of Long Island. His fans will travel, and will buy beer. Light heavy Seanie, age 33, sports a 23-0 record, with 15 KOs. He last gloved up Dec. 13, and beat Daniel Regi, via TKO3. Another Jerseyite, J-Rod, sports a 9-0 with 8 stops.
We will keep you apprised of the foes as more deets come out.
Tru is owned by Turner Broadcasting, and used to be Court TV. Turner is a division of Time Warner. About 90 million people can get Tru TV on their TV, so fight fans have to be happy the sport is being embraced in a new place.
HBO is a subsidiary of Time Warner, and Top Rank provides most of the boxing content to them, so this relationship makes a bit of sense, then.
