Mayweather – Pacquiao : The Morning After

Published

on

AS OF MAY 3, 2015 – The morning after Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao, whatever the result, the sun will still appear above the horizon. Shadows will stretch across beautiful wonders, both natural and man-made. As usual, hearts will be broken, mended, frozen and thawed. Real justice will not always prevail. Heroes will remain true to the cause. Many heroes will be boxers.

By approximate reasoning, Mayweather versus Pacquiao will have concluded well before midnight. That’s Nevada time, not Las Vegas time, which can often seem to evaporate, or flash in a freeze frame.

The over/under is five arrests at or near the MGM Grand Garden before the post fight press conference has concluded.

Immediately after the official result has been announced, some goober in the upper bleachers will start squawking and bolt for the doors as if he’s holding a ticket so hot it may combust before he can get to the sports book cashier. His ticket will be for a small sum on the loser.

Soon after the fight, somebody on the press conference dais will make a loud fuss about being the victim of multiple conspiracies. A few onlookers in the media section will shrug as if they might concur, but really, they do not.

In the early morning hours after the fight, somebody exiting the casino will make a loud fuss about the loser being the victim of multiple conspiracies. A few onlookers by the slot machines will shrug as if they might concur, but really, they do not.

Not long past dawn after the fight, the main event’s referee will have many more messages than usual in his mailbox. He will not worry at all about even glancing at most of them until much later.

The day after the fight, Mayweather will reflect that it was the most profitable and important fight of his career, in that order.

The day after the fight, Al Haymon will consider a rematch and feel Mayweather – Pacquiao was the most important and profitable fight he has promoted. So far.

The day after the fight, Bob Arum will consider a rematch and feel that Mayweather – Pacquiao was the most profitable, but not one of the top three most important fights he’s promoted.

The afternoon following the fight, Mayweather will post photos of his face to show he was never hurt. The afternoon following the fight, Pacquiao will post photos of his face to show he was never hurt.

Later in the afternoon following the fight, Mayweather will appear in public at a crowded location.

At some point, Mayweather will make statements to the effect that he will be retired before 2017.

At some point Pacquiao will make statements to the effect that he will be retired before 2017.

The day after the fight it will seem like the Sunday sports shows have more ads than ever for televised boxing.

The day after the fight there will be countless new reactions, posted by commenting cockroaches, that have nothing to do with boxing and everything to do with prejudice.

The day after the fight there will be debate, some thoughtful, some stupid, regarding whether or not the fight was ultimately “good for boxing.”

The day after the fight, hundreds of the privileged public and dozens of the major media who sat close to the ring will blab about the fight without having a clue, beyond basics and stats, about what they really witnessed.

The day after the fight, millions in the general viewing public and hundreds of non-boxing websites will post topics about what they read by somebody in major media without having a clue, beyond basics and stats, about what they really witnessed.

The evening after Mayweather – Pacquiao, whatever the result, the sun will still sink beneath the horizon. Shadows will stretch, in an opposite direction, across beautiful wonders, both natural and man made.

Hearts will be broken, mended, frozen and thawed.

Real justice will not always prevail.

Heroes will remain true to the cause. Many heroes will be boxers.

The day after the fight, many excellent Vegas handicappers will agree that Mayweather – Pacquiao was one of the most complicated propositions they ever had to evaluate.

The day after the fight, by the most probable logic available through comparative career performances, relatively recent form and the tendencies of fate, Floyd Mayweather, Jr will still be undefeated, but Manny Pacquiao will still be more popular.

It will be many days after the fight before Mayweather – Pacquiao is old news.
