Khan Edges Out Algieri in Solid Scrap, in Brooklyn
Chris Algieri showed the world that he belonged on these big stages, as he was right there with Amir Khan in Brooklyn, on Saturday night.
I thought I saw a fight that could have been scored a draw, as Algieri’s hand speed, and reflexes, and ccordination, were on message. He landed power shot at Barclays Center, with both hands, and though Khan did too, the judges liked the Brit’s work much more: he won by scores of 117-111, 117-111, 115-113.
Khan was master of distance early; he used his feet to great advantage. But once Algieri got warmed up, the Long Islander who will not be hearing so many cage jokes in the future put tons of pressure on the winner.
He popped to the body, looked to land a home run right, landed some left hooks, and made Khan work really hard.
There were no knockdowns and yes, Khan did some clinching, but the action was for the most part athletic. John David Jackson asked Algieri to come forward, stay in his face, and he did. He dipped his head, was slippery, though so was Khan.
Khan was sometimes an eel, using his feet smartly and sometimes the octopus, clinching to blunt a charge.
Readers, I could see a draw..and would be happy to see a rematch. How did you score it?
