Golovkin Will Know Next Better After Cotto-Geale
So, who and what is next for “the best middleweight in the world.”
That’s Gennady Golovkin, y’all, at least according to a man you’d expect would hold that level of assurance, Tom Loeffler.
He happens to promote the Beiber-faced banger, the fighting pride of Kazahkstan, who is now in picking mode on who to scrap with next.
So, any movement on that front, Tom?
“He is coming your way, to New York, Michael,” the promoter told me. “He’s coming to watch the Cotto-Geale fight. And he’s not coming to stalk Cotto, per se, but he wants that WBC belt. He and Miguel are friendly, he has respect for Miguel, and so does trainer Abel Sanchez. But that’s the title he wants. Also, he has a good relationship with Freddie.”
Yeah, even when Freddie talks smack about Gennady not being a draw? Sure, said Loeffler. “If I had Cotto, I wouldn’t want him fighting Gennady either!”
So, next for Golovkin depends, maybe, on what happens Saturday in Brooklyn.
Yes, we’ve heard a Cotto vs. Canelo clash is on the front-burner if and when Cotto handles the Aussie challenger. Loeffler knows this, understands it. But what if Geale snags the upset? Regardless, in the promoters’ mind, “the more Gennady fights, the fewer excuses people have to avoid him. That he’s not known, or marketable…The champs are running out of excuses!”
Apart from the Saturday participants, Loeffler will pay attention to the June 20 David Lemieux-Hassan N’Dam showdown; also, “Carl Froch is a very interesting fight, if Eddie Hearn can get him to commit. And Andy Lee is someone who is out there, Gennady would like to fight him,” Loeffler said. “Danny Jacobs has a WBA belt, he’s on the radar, too.” (Though Loeffler hasn’t broached any talks with Team Haymon in a long spell. The last time, he said, was when Richard Schaefer was still with Golden Boy…)
“Anyway, there’s a lot of talent in the division. And the more he fights, again, the fewer excuses the other guys will have!”
