Team Golovkin Thinking Triple G Vs. Lemieux Is Next

A fight with Floyd Mayweather is something everyone and their brother, if they are between 135 and 168 pounds, thinks about, craves, ponders. If you fight, and want to make moolah, “Money” is your guy.

So, there is no shortage of folks talked about to be in the mix to be Floyd’s next dance partner to do the fistic waltz in Vegas, in September.

There is a growing chorus of fans wanting the powers that be to make the match, maybe the only match, that they can conceive of which will see Mayweather, the superlative pugilist-specialist, tested: that’s Mayweather vs. Gennady Golovkin. But, if we assume that Floyd continues to avoid a move toward a boxer who campaigns as a legit middleweight, with the reasoning being that the GGG power might be too high a hill for him to climb, that leaves us scratching Money off the list of possible partners for Golovkin.

Triple G’s popularity and cred as a drawing power ticked up yet another notch when he packed 12,4000 into the LA Forum for his scrap against Willie Monroe Jr.

Who is Gennady fighting next has become a top-tier perennial question after his bouts, with guys like me in full on pester mode toward his promoter, Tom Loeffler. What about it Tom, who’s in the lead to get a crack in September against the fighting pride of Kazakhstan?

David Lemieux, the power punching Candian hitman who had Hassan N’Dam looking like a human yo-yo Saturday night in Montreal, he said.

“Gennady’s goal has been to unify the middleweight division,” Loeffler told me Tuesday, and, as Lemiuex took the vacant IBF 160 strap Saturday, Golovkin has his eyes on it and would like to perform a liberation attack upon the handsome hammer-fisted Canadian. “They are two of the biggest punchers in the division, so that fight would be the priority from our standpoint,” he continued. Loeffler saw the outing versus N’Dam, and said he was impressed. It was nothing he didn’t know, he said, Lemieux can crack, and he believes he is a world-class boxer.

“A lot of people want to wait to fight Golovkin, but right now, that would be a big fight,” Loeffler continued.

He said that Gennady’s chosen platform, partner HBO, wants the tiff, and his aim would be to present Golovkin-Lemieux on pay-per-view, because it would generate the most revenue, off that setup. “It would generate the most for both fighters. Gennady now has such a fan base, and with his TV ratings, and his ticket sales, in a unification fight versus another champion, that would be components for his first PPV.”

He said the IBF is open to the clash, as are the WBA and WBC, whose belts Triple G has in his possession. And does he think Lemieux wants it now, or will he maybe put if off, seek to let it marinate, and come back to it at a time when he thinks his purse will be grander? “It’s just a matter of getting a deal done with Lemieux,” he said, of the boxer promoted by Golden Boy and advised by Camille Estephan. “It would be by far his biggest purse. We have overpaid consistently to get people in the ring with Gennady.”

And, we can assume, he thinks the price can be made right for Lemieux to be convinced to sign on to manufacture one of the most anticipated bomber vs. bomber bouts in recent boxing history.
